Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Knowledge of Cloud-Based Accounting Systems in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Cloud-based accounting systems have become increasingly relevant to modern accounting practice as organizations adopt internet-based platforms for recording, processing, storing, accessing, and managing financial information. Accounting professionals are increasingly expected to understand cloud accounting technologies and their applications in financial record keeping, transaction processing, reporting, collaboration, data storage, and financial information management. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited exposure to cloud-based accounting systems, particularly where accounting instruction remains predominantly theoretical or relies on traditional accounting software and manual procedures. Accounting Education provides an opportunity to equip students with relevant knowledge of emerging accounting technologies and prepare them for technology-driven accounting workplaces. Effective accounting education may therefore improve students’ understanding of the features, applications, benefits, limitations, and appropriate use of cloud-based accounting systems. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Accounting Education on students’ knowledge of cloud-based accounting systems in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical knowledge through experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. The Technology Acceptance Model emphasizes perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as important factors influencing individuals’ understanding and acceptance of technological systems. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant education and technology-related knowledge enhances students’ productivity, employability, and preparedness for professional responsibilities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Education may influence students’ knowledge of cloud-based accounting systems. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, cloud-accounting knowledge assessment instruments, practical knowledge tests, scenario-based questions, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Education will be assessed using indicators such as classroom instruction on cloud accounting, lectures on cloud-based accounting systems, practical demonstrations, cloud-accounting tutorials, hands-on exercises, accounting-software laboratory activities, case studies, guided practice, technology-supported assignments, collaborative learning, lecturer demonstrations, practical assessments, project-based learning, exposure to accounting technology, software-based exercises, digital accounting activities, cloud-accounting simulations, and access to relevant instructional materials. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, cloud-accounting knowledge scores before and after exposure to technology-focused Accounting Education may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional accounting instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Education has a significant positive effect on students’ knowledge of cloud-based accounting systems in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to technology-oriented Accounting Education are expected to demonstrate greater understanding of cloud accounting concepts, applications, features, benefits, limitations, security requirements, and accounting functions than students with limited exposure. Instruction on cloud accounting concepts may improve students’ understanding of internet-based accounting systems. Practical demonstrations may strengthen students’ familiarity with cloud-accounting interfaces and applications. Cloud-accounting tutorials may improve students’ ability to understand technology-supported accounting procedures. Hands-on exercises may strengthen students’ understanding of how cloud systems are used to record and manage financial transactions. Accounting-software laboratory activities may improve students’ familiarity with technology-driven accounting environments. Case studies may strengthen students’ ability to recognize practical applications of cloud accounting. Guided practice may improve students’ understanding of cloud-based accounting workflows. Technology-supported assignments may encourage students to apply cloud-accounting concepts to realistic situations. Collaborative learning may improve understanding of multi-user accounting environments.
