Impact of Continuous Assessment Practices on Students’ Academic Achievement in Accounting Education in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Continuous assessment is an important component of the teaching and learning process in higher education because it provides opportunities for students to demonstrate learning progressively through tests, assignments, class exercises, projects, presentations, quizzes, practical activities, and other forms of academic evaluation. In Accounting Education, continuous assessment may help lecturers monitor students’ understanding of accounting concepts, identify learning difficulties, provide feedback, and encourage regular study. However, variations in the frequency, methods, quality, feedback, and implementation of continuous assessment practices may influence students’ academic achievement. In Nigerian universities, concerns regarding students’ performance in accounting courses may partly be associated with inadequate assessment practices, irregular feedback, excessive assessment workload, poor alignment between assessment activities and course objectives, and limited use of practical and formative assessment approaches. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of continuous assessment practices on students’ academic achievement in Accounting Education in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Assessment for Learning Theory, Constructivist Learning Theory, and Behaviourist Learning Theory. Assessment for Learning Theory emphasizes the use of assessment to monitor learning, provide feedback, identify learning gaps, and improve subsequent learning. Constructivist Learning Theory explains how students actively construct knowledge through learning activities, classroom interaction, problem-solving, and reflection, while assessment provides opportunities to demonstrate and refine such knowledge. Behaviourist Learning Theory emphasizes the role of reinforcement, practice, feedback, and repeated assessment in strengthening learning outcomes. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how continuous assessment practices may influence students’ academic achievement in Accounting Education. The study will adopt a quantitative correlational or quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Continuous assessment practices will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of continuous assessment, types of assessment activities, classroom tests, assignments, quizzes, practical accounting exercises, group assignments, individual assignments, projects, presentations, case studies, take-home exercises, computer-based assessments, accounting problem-solving tasks, assessment scheduling, assessment coverage, alignment with course objectives, assessment difficulty, assessment clarity, assessment fairness, assessment consistency, assessment validity, assessment reliability, marking procedures, grading procedures, timeliness of feedback, quality of feedback, corrective feedback, opportunities for reassessment, lecturer comments, assessment monitoring, assessment record keeping, student participation, attendance-related assessment, practical assessment, formative assessment, summative assessment, peer assessment, self-assessment, and use of assessment results to improve instruction. Students’ academic achievement will be measured using course test scores, continuous assessment scores, examination scores, semester grade point performance, cumulative academic performance, accounting-course grades, practical accounting scores, and standardized academic achievement tests where appropriate. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, continuous assessment records, accounting achievement tests, students’ academic records, assessment schedules, lecturers’ assessment records, and relevant university documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ characteristics, patterns of continuous assessment, assessment experiences, and academic achievement. Inferential statistical techniques, including correlation analysis, t-tests, analysis of variance, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of continuous assessment practices on students’ academic achievement. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ achievement scores before and after exposure to structured continuous assessment practices may be compared with those of a comparison group receiving conventional assessment practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that effective continuous assessment practices have a significant positive effect on students’ academic achievement in Accounting Education in Nigerian universities. Regular classroom tests may encourage students to study consistently and identify accounting concepts that require additional attention. Frequent quizzes may promote retention and provide lecturers with information about students’ understanding of course content. Individual assignments may strengthen independent learning and students’ ability to apply accounting principles to specific problems. Group assignments may promote collaborative learning and exposure to different approaches to accounting problems. Practical accounting exercises may improve students’ ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical accounting applications. Projects may strengthen students’ research, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Presentations may improve students’ ability to communicate accounting information effectively. Case studies may expose students to realistic accounting situations and encourage application of accounting principles to practical problems. Computer-based assessments may improve students’ familiarity with technology-supported assessment environments. Clear assessment instructions may improve students’ understanding of expected academic tasks. Appropriate assessment difficulty may provide sufficient academic challenge without discouraging students. Fair assessment procedures may improve students’ confidence in the evaluation process. Consistent assessment methods may provide students with predictable opportunities to demonstrate learning. Valid assessments may ensure that students are evaluated on relevant accounting knowledge and skills. Reliable assessment procedures may improve the consistency of academic evaluation. Timely marking and grading may enable students to understand their performance while course content remains relevant. Constructive lecturer feedback may help students identify errors, correct misconceptions, and improve subsequent performance. Corrective feedback may strengthen students’ understanding of difficult accounting concepts. Opportunities for reassessment may allow students to learn from previous mistakes and demonstrate improved understanding. Lecturer comments may provide specific guidance for improving academic work. Regular assessment monitoring may enable lecturers to identify students experiencing learning difficulties. Proper assessment record keeping may facilitate accurate monitoring of students’ academic progress. Student participation in assessment activities may encourage regular engagement with accounting courses. Formative assessment may provide continuous information about learning progress, while summative assessment may provide evidence of overall achievement. Peer assessment may expose students to alternative solutions and evaluation criteria. Self-assessment may encourage students to reflect on their own learning and identify areas requiring improvement. The use of assessment results to modify teaching may enable lecturers to address identified learning gaps. However, the effectiveness of continuous assessment practices may be constrained by excessive assessment workload, large class sizes, inadequate accounting laboratories, limited teaching resources, insufficient lecturer time, inconsistent assessment schedules, delayed feedback, poor-quality assessment instruments, excessive reliance on theoretical tests, inadequate practical assessment, student absenteeism, academic dishonesty, assessment anxiety, poor student participation, inadequate record management, and weak alignment between continuous assessment activities and accounting course objectives. The study therefore expects well-planned, valid, reliable, balanced, practical, timely, and feedback-oriented continuous assessment practices to contribute significantly to improved academic achievement among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on continuous assessment practices, academic achievement, Accounting Education, educational assessment, formative assessment, summative assessment, classroom testing, accounting tests, assignments, quizzes, practical assessment, accounting projects, case-based assessment, computer-based assessment, assessment feedback, academic performance, accounting achievement, student learning, assessment quality, assessment validity, assessment reliability, assessment fairness, assessment effectiveness, assessment monitoring, academic progress, accounting education pedagogy, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, examination and assessment units, educational policymakers, and other stakeholders regarding strategies for improving assessment practices and students’ academic performance. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening continuous assessment systems in Accounting Education programmes, improving the quality and variety of assessment activities, increasing the use of practical accounting assessments, ensuring timely and constructive feedback, improving assessment validity and reliability, balancing formative and summative assessment, strengthening assessment record keeping, reducing excessive assessment workload, improving lecturer assessment competencies, and aligning continuous assessment practices with the learning objectives of Accounting Education programmes in Nigerian universities.
