Impact of Electronic Financial Reporting Education on Students’ Financial Reporting Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

 

Abstract

Electronic financial reporting has become an important component of modern accounting practice as organizations increasingly use computerized accounting systems, digital reporting platforms, spreadsheets, accounting software, and electronic financial information systems to prepare, process, present, and communicate financial information. Accounting personnel are therefore expected to possess the knowledge and practical skills required to prepare accurate, timely, complete, and properly presented financial reports using digital technologies. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited exposure to practical electronic financial reporting activities, which may create a gap between classroom knowledge and the digital reporting competencies required in contemporary accounting workplaces. Electronic Financial Reporting Education provides students with opportunities to learn and practise the preparation, processing, analysis, presentation, and communication of financial reports using technology-supported accounting environments. Such education may improve students’ ability to apply accounting principles while using digital tools for financial reporting. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Electronic Financial Reporting Education on students’ financial reporting skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Technology Acceptance Model. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use may influence students’ acceptance and effective utilization of electronic technologies for financial reporting. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Electronic Financial Reporting Education may influence students’ financial reporting skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial reporting skills assessment instruments, electronic financial reporting practical tasks, accounting software exercises, spreadsheet-based reporting activities, practical performance rubrics, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial reporting skill scores before and after exposure to Electronic Financial Reporting Education may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Electronic Financial Reporting Education has a significant positive impact on students’ financial reporting skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured and practical electronic financial reporting education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to process accounting information, prepare financial statements, analyse financial data, verify financial reports, and communicate financial information using digital technologies. Electronic financial reporting concept activities may improve students’ understanding of technology-supported reporting procedures. Accounting software exercises may strengthen students’ ability to generate financial reports from computerized accounting records. Spreadsheet-based reporting activities may improve students’ ability to organize, calculate, analyse, and present financial information. Electronic journal and ledger activities may strengthen students’ ability to process accounting transactions digitally. Electronic trial-balance exercises may improve students’ ability to identify account balances and prepare reports accurately.
