Assessment of Agricultural Extension Service Coverage among Rural Farmers

Abstract

Agricultural extension services provide farmers with technical knowledge, advisory support, and information required to improve farm production and management. Effective extension coverage is important for ensuring that rural farmers have adequate access to agricultural information, improved technologies, production practices, and other support services. However, differences in the availability and distribution of extension personnel and services may affect the extent to which rural farmers are reached and served. This study will assess agricultural extension service coverage among rural farmers. It will examine the extent to which farmers are reached by agricultural extension personnel and programmes and determine the availability and accessibility of extension services within rural farming communities. The study will also assess the frequency of extension contacts and the types of agricultural services provided to rural farmers. The study will focus on farmers’ access to extension agents, frequency of extension visits, distance to extension service points, participation in extension programmes, availability of group-based advisory services, and access to agricultural information and demonstrations. It will also examine the areas of support provided through extension services, including crop production, livestock management, input use, pest and disease management, soil management, agricultural marketing, post-harvest handling, and improved farming technologies. Factors that may influence extension service coverage, such as inadequate extension personnel, limited transportation, poor rural infrastructure, large farmer populations, and geographical barriers, will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from rural farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their access to agricultural extension services and the level of coverage within their communities. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Appropriate inferential techniques, including correlation and regression analysis, will also be used to examine relationships between extension service coverage and farmers’ access to extension support. The study is expected to reveal variations in agricultural extension service coverage among rural farmers, with some farmers having regular access to extension agents and others receiving limited or irregular extension support. Farmers located closer to extension service points or actively participating in farmer groups may have greater opportunities to receive extension information and advisory services. However, inadequate staffing, limited mobility of extension agents, insufficient funding, poor infrastructure, and geographical difficulties may restrict effective coverage in some rural communities. The study will be useful to rural farmers, agricultural extension agents, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for identifying gaps in extension service delivery and improving the distribution of extension personnel and resources. The study may also assist agricultural development agencies in planning extension programmes that respond more effectively to the needs of underserved rural farming communities. The study concludes that adequate agricultural extension service coverage is important for ensuring that rural farmers have access to relevant agricultural information, technical advice, and improved farming practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies should strengthen the deployment of extension personnel, improve mobility and logistical support, expand group-based extension activities, and adopt complementary communication channels to reach farmers who are difficult to access through conventional extension methods.
