Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Disease-Resistant Crop Varieties

Abstract

Disease-resistant crop varieties are important agricultural technologies that can help farmers reduce crop losses caused by plant diseases and improve the stability of crop production. The use of resistant varieties can reduce dependence on chemical disease control methods, lower production risks, and support more sustainable crop management. Farmers’ adoption of disease-resistant crop varieties may, however, depend on their knowledge, access to quality planting materials, availability of recommended varieties, and understanding of their production benefits. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of disease-resistant crop varieties. The study will determine the extent to which farmers use disease-resistant varieties in their farming activities and identify the types of resistant varieties adopted by them. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the benefits and characteristics of disease-resistant crop varieties and identify factors that may influence their adoption decisions. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness and use of disease-resistant crop varieties, sources of information on resistant varieties, access to improved planting materials, selection of suitable varieties, frequency of use, area of farmland planted with resistant varieties, and farmers’ perceptions of their performance. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of disease resistance, yield potential, crop adaptability, seed quality, availability, and the importance of using recommended varieties for effective disease management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their adoption of disease-resistant crop varieties and related knowledge and practices. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate statistical techniques such as correlation and regression analysis may be used to examine relationships between farmers’ characteristics, access to agricultural information, and adoption levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of disease-resistant crop varieties among farmers. Farmers with greater awareness, access to agricultural extension information, and improved planting materials may demonstrate higher adoption levels. However, factors such as limited availability of resistant varieties, high cost of quality seeds, inadequate information, poor access to input suppliers, and uncertainty about varietal performance may limit adoption among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, plant breeders, seed producers, crop protection specialists, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for understanding farmers’ adoption patterns and identifying gaps in the dissemination and availability of disease-resistant crop varieties. The findings may also assist stakeholders in strengthening extension programmes, seed distribution systems, and farmer education on the benefits and proper use of resistant varieties. The study concludes that adoption of disease-resistant crop varieties can contribute to improved crop disease management and more sustainable agricultural production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education on available resistant varieties, their characteristics, benefits, and appropriate production practices. Improved access to quality planting materials, reliable information, demonstration activities, and affordable disease-resistant varieties should also be promoted to encourage wider adoption among farmers.
