Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Alternative Agricultural Market Channels
Abstract
Alternative agricultural market channels refer to different pathways through which farmers can sell their agricultural products beyond conventional farm-gate and traditional market arrangements. These channels may include direct sales to consumers, cooperative marketing, contract marketing, digital marketplaces, institutional buyers, processors, supermarkets, and other organised outlets. Knowledge of alternative market channels can help farmers identify suitable buyers, improve market access, reduce dependence on a single outlet, and explore opportunities for better returns from agricultural products. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of alternative agricultural market channels. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the different market channels available for selling agricultural products and determine their ability to identify suitable channels for their farm enterprises. The study will also identify farmers’ sources of information about alternative markets and assess areas where farmers may have inadequate knowledge. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of direct-to-consumer sales, cooperative marketing, contract marketing, digital agricultural marketplaces, institutional buyers, agro-processors, supermarkets, wholesalers, retailers, community markets, and other emerging market outlets. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of factors considered when selecting market channels, including market prices, customer demand, transaction costs, product quality requirements, payment arrangements, transportation, and market accessibility. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires containing questions and knowledge assessment items relating to alternative agricultural market channels. The data will be analysed using frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and identify major knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of alternative agricultural market channels. While some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of cooperative marketing, direct sales, and institutional buyers, others may have limited awareness of digital marketplaces, contract marketing, processor-based markets, and other emerging channels. The findings may also indicate that access to agricultural extension services, market information, farmer organisations, and digital information platforms contributes to farmers’ knowledge of alternative market opportunities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, agribusiness organisations, produce marketers, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for developing extension programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of diverse market channels and strengthen their market participation. The findings may also assist farmers in identifying suitable buyers, improving market access, reducing marketing constraints, and making informed decisions about where and how to sell their agricultural products. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of alternative agricultural market channels is important for improving farmers’ market access and strengthening the marketing of agricultural products. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide farmers with practical information on available market channels, market requirements, pricing, buyer identification, digital marketing platforms, and cooperative marketing arrangements. Extension agents should also provide timely market information to enable farmers to explore diverse marketing opportunities and improve the sustainability of their farm enterprises.
