Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Bambara Groundnut Storage Techniques

Abstract

Bambara groundnut is an important food and cash crop valued for its nutritional content, income-generating potential, and contribution to household food security. Proper storage of harvested Bambara groundnut is essential for maintaining grain quality, reducing postharvest losses, and ensuring availability for consumption, planting, and marketing. However, inadequate knowledge of appropriate storage techniques may expose stored produce to insect infestation, moisture damage, mould growth, deterioration, and other forms of postharvest loss. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of effective storage techniques is therefore important for improving the management of harvested Bambara groundnut. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of Bambara groundnut storage techniques. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended storage methods, identify the storage techniques commonly used by farmers, and assess their understanding of factors that influence the quality and safety of stored Bambara groundnut. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of appropriate storage preparation, handling, pest control, moisture management, and monitoring practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of Bambara groundnut storage techniques, storage preparation, drying, moisture control, storage containers, storage structures, insect pest management, mould prevention, sanitation, grain inspection, storage duration, ventilation, hermetic storage, and preservation of seed quality. Information will be obtained from Bambara groundnut farmers to determine their knowledge of appropriate storage practices and identify areas where knowledge gaps may exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected Bambara groundnut farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ level of understanding of storage techniques, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of Bambara groundnut storage practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding Bambara groundnut storage techniques. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of drying, container selection, sanitation, and pest control, while others may have limited knowledge of moisture management, hermetic storage, mould prevention, and regular monitoring of stored produce. The study may also reveal specific knowledge gaps that contribute to postharvest losses and deterioration of stored Bambara groundnut. The study will be useful to Bambara groundnut farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, postharvest management organizations, and policymakers. It may provide information needed to design appropriate farmer education and extension programmes on improved storage techniques. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting affordable and practical storage methods that can reduce postharvest losses and improve the quality and market value of Bambara groundnut. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is an important factor in the effective management and storage of Bambara groundnut after harvest. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant agricultural organizations strengthen farmer education on proper drying, moisture control, storage container selection, pest management, sanitation, hermetic storage, and regular monitoring of stored produce. Increased access to practical storage demonstrations and technical information may further improve farmers’ knowledge and contribute to reduced postharvest losses.
