Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Community-Based Agricultural Outreach Programmes

Abstract

Community-based agricultural outreach programmes provide opportunities for farmers to access agricultural information, technical guidance, demonstrations, training, and other support services within their local communities. Such programmes can improve farmers’ awareness of recommended agricultural practices and strengthen interaction between farmers and agricultural service providers. However, the effectiveness of outreach activities may depend partly on farmers’ understanding of their objectives, services, participation opportunities, and available support. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of community-based agricultural outreach programmes is therefore important for improving participation and service delivery. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of community-based agricultural outreach programmes. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and knowledge of available outreach programmes, assess their understanding of the services provided, and identify areas where knowledge gaps exist. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of participation procedures, programme activities, extension support, training opportunities, and sources of information about community-based agricultural initiatives. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of community-based agricultural outreach programmes, programme awareness, agricultural information, extension activities, farmer training, demonstration activities, community meetings, advisory services, participation opportunities, programme objectives, service providers, agricultural technologies, and sources of programme information. Information will be obtained from farmers within selected communities to determine their knowledge and understanding of agricultural outreach initiatives available to them. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to assess farmers’ understanding of community-based outreach programmes, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their level of knowledge. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding community-based agricultural outreach programmes. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate awareness of extension meetings, training activities, demonstrations, and advisory services, while others may have limited knowledge of programme objectives, participation opportunities, available services, and sources of programme information. The study may also identify specific information gaps that limit farmers’ participation in community-based agricultural outreach activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving the design and communication of community-based agricultural outreach programmes. The findings may also assist service providers in developing more accessible information channels and outreach strategies that respond to farmers’ information needs. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is important for effective participation in and utilization of community-based agricultural outreach programmes. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant organizations strengthen community-level awareness campaigns, farmer meetings, practical demonstrations, and accessible communication channels. Clear information about programme objectives, available services, participation procedures, and training opportunities should be provided to improve farmers’ knowledge and engagement with agricultural outreach programmes.
