Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Disease-Resistant Crop Varieties

Abstract

Disease-resistant crop varieties are important tools for managing crop diseases and reducing production losses associated with plant pathogens. The use of resistant varieties can help farmers reduce their dependence on chemical control methods, improve crop performance, and promote more sustainable agricultural production. Adequate knowledge of the characteristics, benefits, availability, and appropriate use of disease-resistant varieties is therefore important for farmers. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance needed to improve their knowledge of these improved crop varieties. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of disease-resistant crop varieties. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural advisory services and determine their level of knowledge regarding the characteristics, benefits, identification, selection, and use of disease-resistant crop varieties. It will also identify areas of knowledge where farmers may require additional advisory support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of disease resistance, crop varieties available for different production conditions, common diseases targeted by resistant varieties, varietal characteristics, seed quality, sources of disease-resistant planting materials, and appropriate production practices. It will also examine the role of advisory services through farm visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, farmer meetings, extension communication, and agricultural information materials in improving farmers’ knowledge of disease-resistant crop varieties. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of disease-resistant crop varieties. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between exposure to advisory services and farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater exposure to agricultural advisory services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of disease-resistant crop varieties. Advisory services are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of the benefits, characteristics, selection, availability, and appropriate use of resistant varieties. However, inadequate advisory contact, limited access to improved planting materials, insufficient information, high cost of quality seeds, and poor availability of recommended varieties may restrict farmers’ acquisition and application of relevant knowledge. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, plant breeders, seed producers, crop protection specialists, agricultural research institutions, government agricultural agencies, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes that promote farmers’ understanding of disease-resistant crop varieties. The findings may also assist agricultural stakeholders in developing farmer-oriented training materials, demonstration programmes, and information services that improve access to knowledge about resistant varieties. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of disease-resistant crop varieties by providing relevant information and practical guidance. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen advisory services through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, field days, and accessible educational materials. Farmers should also be encouraged to obtain reliable information on recommended resistant varieties and use quality planting materials to support effective crop disease management and sustainable agricultural production.
