Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Irrigation Water Conservation

Abstract

Irrigation water conservation is an important component of sustainable agricultural production, particularly in areas where water resources are limited or irregularly available. Efficient management of irrigation water can help farmers reduce water losses, maintain adequate soil moisture, improve crop productivity, and conserve available water resources. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information and practical guidance on appropriate irrigation water conservation methods and efficient water-use practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water conservation. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of irrigation water conservation practices and determine the extent to which agricultural advisory services contribute to improved understanding of efficient water management. It will also examine the forms and frequency of advisory support received by farmers and identify areas where additional information is required. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of efficient irrigation scheduling, appropriate irrigation timing, reduction of water runoff and evaporation, maintenance of irrigation channels, prevention of water leakage, soil moisture conservation, use of water-efficient irrigation methods, mulching, appropriate field preparation, and monitoring of irrigation water use. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to farm visits, demonstrations, training programmes, advisory meetings, and other sources of irrigation water management information. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to measure their exposure to agricultural advisory services and their knowledge of irrigation water conservation. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water conservation practices. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water conservation based on their exposure to agricultural advisory services. Farmers who receive regular advisory information, demonstrations, farm visits, and practical training may demonstrate better knowledge of efficient irrigation scheduling, water-loss reduction, soil moisture conservation, and irrigation system maintenance. The study may also identify knowledge gaps associated with inadequate advisory contact, limited access to irrigation technologies, poor maintenance facilities, and insufficient information on water-saving practices. The study will be useful to irrigation farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation development agencies, water resource authorities, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes that promote efficient irrigation water management and support sustainable agricultural production. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can contribute to improving farmers’ knowledge of irrigation water conservation and promoting more efficient use of irrigation resources. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and irrigation agencies strengthen advisory services through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and accessible educational materials on water conservation. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt appropriate water-saving practices and maintain irrigation facilities to reduce water losses and improve the sustainability of irrigated agriculture.
