Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Irrigation Scheduling Practices

Abstract

Irrigation scheduling is an important farm management practice that involves determining the appropriate timing, frequency, and amount of water required by crops during the production period. Proper irrigation scheduling can help farmers use available water efficiently, maintain suitable soil moisture, reduce water losses, and support healthy crop growth. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with the knowledge and technical guidance required to understand and adopt appropriate irrigation scheduling practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of irrigation scheduling practices. The study will assess the extent to which farmers adopt recommended irrigation scheduling methods and determine how exposure to agricultural extension services influences their adoption. It will also examine farmers’ access to extension information and identify areas where additional advisory support is required to improve irrigation management. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as determining irrigation timing, adjusting irrigation frequency according to crop growth stages, monitoring soil moisture, considering weather conditions, estimating crop water requirements, determining appropriate irrigation duration, avoiding over-irrigation and under-irrigation, and maintaining irrigation records. It will also consider farmers’ exposure to farm visits, demonstrations, training programmes, group meetings, and other agricultural advisory activities related to irrigation management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural extension services and adoption of irrigation scheduling practices. The collected data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations to determine adoption levels, while correlation and regression analyses will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of irrigation scheduling practices. The study is expected to reveal variations in farmers’ adoption of irrigation scheduling practices based on their exposure to agricultural extension services. Farmers who receive regular extension visits, practical demonstrations, training, and irrigation advisory information may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate irrigation timing, frequency, soil moisture monitoring, and water application practices. The study may also identify challenges such as inadequate technical information, limited access to irrigation technologies, unreliable water supply, high operating costs, and insufficient extension contact. The study will be useful to irrigation farmers, agricultural extension agents, irrigation development agencies, agricultural development programmes, water resource authorities, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote efficient irrigation scheduling and improve the sustainable use of agricultural water resources. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of irrigation scheduling practices among farmers. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and irrigation agencies strengthen advisory services through practical demonstrations, farm visits, training programmes, and accessible materials on crop water requirements and irrigation scheduling. Farmers should also be encouraged to monitor soil moisture, consider crop and weather conditions, maintain irrigation records, and apply water according to recommended schedules to improve water-use efficiency and crop production.
