Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Seedling Tray Production

Abstract

Seedling tray production is an improved nursery management practice that involves raising seedlings in structured trays designed to provide suitable growing conditions before transplanting to the field. The practice can promote uniform seedling development, efficient use of planting materials, easier nursery management, and reduced transplanting losses. Agricultural extension can support farmers by providing information, technical guidance, demonstrations, and practical skills needed to understand and adopt appropriate seedling tray production practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of seedling tray production. It will assess the extent to which extension services influence farmers’ knowledge and use of seedling trays for nursery establishment and seedling management. The study will also examine the contribution of extension visits, demonstrations, training programmes, advisory information, and technical support to farmers’ adoption of seedling tray production. The study will focus on agricultural extension, seedling tray production, nursery management, seedling propagation, tray preparation, growing media, seed placement, watering practices, seedling spacing, nursery hygiene, seedling quality, transplanting preparation, extension contact, and technology adoption. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on seedling tray production and identify challenges that may affect their access to suitable trays, nursery materials, technical information, and other resources required for effective adoption. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to agricultural extension services, knowledge of seedling tray production, and level of adoption of recommended nursery practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of seedling tray production. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of seedling tray production. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance may demonstrate greater knowledge and increased use of seedling trays and recommended nursery management practices. The level of adoption may also vary according to the availability and cost of seedling trays, access to extension services, farmers’ technical knowledge, type of crops produced, and perceived benefits of tray-based seedling production. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, nursery operators, agricultural cooperatives, horticultural producers, government agricultural agencies, development organisations, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes on improved nursery management and seedling production technologies. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing practical training and demonstration programmes that encourage farmers to adopt suitable seedling tray production methods. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of seedling tray production by increasing farmers’ knowledge, technical skills, and awareness of improved nursery management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination on seedling tray production. Farmers should also be encouraged to adopt suitable and affordable tray-based nursery practices to improve seedling quality, reduce nursery losses, promote efficient use of planting materials, and enhance successful crop establishment.
