Effect of Agricultural Extension Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Crop Disease Identification

Abstract

Crop disease identification is an important aspect of agricultural production because early recognition of disease symptoms can enable farmers to take timely measures to prevent disease spread and reduce crop losses. Farmers’ ability to distinguish common crop diseases from pest damage, nutrient deficiencies, and other production problems is important for effective crop health management. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with technical information and practical guidance on recognizing disease symptoms and taking appropriate management measures. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension services on farmers’ knowledge of crop disease identification. It will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine how extension contact influences their ability to identify common crop diseases and recognize their symptoms. The study will also identify areas of disease identification where farmers may require additional technical education and practical support. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of common crop disease symptoms, disease-causing organisms, visible signs of infection, disease transmission, affected plant parts, disease progression, and differences between diseases, pest damage, and nutrient deficiencies. Attention will also be given to extension activities such as farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, farmer group meetings, field days, and distribution of crop protection information. These services may improve farmers’ ability to recognize disease symptoms accurately and seek appropriate management advice. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires, visual disease identification exercises, and knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ knowledge levels, while knowledge scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ knowledge of crop disease identification. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of crop disease identification. Extension contact may improve farmers’ ability to recognize disease symptoms, distinguish diseases from other crop problems, identify affected plant parts, and seek appropriate management measures. However, limited extension contact, inadequate practical demonstrations, lack of diagnostic materials, limited access to plant health specialists, and difficulties in distinguishing similar symptoms may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, plant pathologists, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the contribution of agricultural extension services to farmers’ knowledge of crop disease identification and identify specific areas requiring additional technical support. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing practical plant health training programmes and visual disease identification materials. The study concludes that agricultural extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of crop disease identification. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical disease identification training, organize regular field demonstrations, provide farmers with reliable visual and technical materials, and improve access to plant health advisory services. These measures can promote early disease detection, support timely management decisions, reduce crop losses, and contribute to sustainable agricultural production.
