Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Boundary Conservation Practices

Abstract

The study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm boundary conservation practices. Farm boundaries can contribute to soil conservation, biodiversity protection, wind reduction, erosion control, and the maintenance of important vegetation within agricultural landscapes. Adoption of appropriate boundary conservation practices can therefore support sustainable land management while helping farmers maintain productive and environmentally responsible farming systems. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of farm boundary conservation practices, including retention of beneficial trees and shrubs, establishment of vegetative boundary strips, planting of grasses along field edges, maintenance of boundary vegetation, protection of boundary trees from unnecessary removal, and management of boundary areas to reduce erosion and wind damage. It will also examine the role of extension education in providing farmers with knowledge and practical guidance on selecting, establishing, maintaining, and conserving suitable farm boundary vegetation. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ exposure to extension education and their adoption of farm boundary conservation practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ exposure to extension education and the extent to which they adopt recommended farm boundary conservation practices. It is also expected to identify areas where farmers demonstrate adequate or inadequate adoption, particularly in relation to boundary vegetation maintenance, erosion control, protection of beneficial trees and shrubs, and management of field-edge vegetation. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, environmental management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on the contribution of extension education to improved farm boundary conservation. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes and field demonstrations that promote conservation of vegetation and natural resources around agricultural fields. The study will conclude that extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills needed to improve the adoption of farm boundary conservation practices. It will recommend regular extension training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on boundary vegetation management, erosion control, tree conservation, and sustainable field-edge management to encourage farmers’ adoption of appropriate conservation practices.
