Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Hospitality Practices

Abstract

Farm hospitality practices refer to the activities and services provided by farmers to improve the experience of visitors on farms, including visitor reception, farm cleanliness, accommodation arrangements, recreational activities, safety measures, and customer service. These practices are becoming relevant to farm-based tourism and agritourism as farmers seek additional opportunities for income generation and rural enterprise development. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and skills required to understand and adopt appropriate hospitality practices that can improve the attractiveness and management of farm-based visitor activities. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of farm hospitality practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education on farm hospitality, determine their level of knowledge of hospitality practices, examine their adoption of visitor reception and customer service practices, and assess their use of cleanliness, safety, accommodation, and recreational arrangements for farm visitors. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ knowledge of farm hospitality, visitor reception practices, farm cleanliness, customer service, visitor safety, accommodation arrangements, recreational activities, farm facilities, and adoption of hospitality practices. It will also consider farmers’ access to extension information and training relating to agritourism and farm-based hospitality. These areas will help to determine the extent to which extension education contributes to farmers’ ability to provide suitable hospitality services to visitors. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers involved or interested in farm-based hospitality activities using structured questionnaires. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of farm hospitality practices. Adoption levels will also be compared among farmers with different levels of exposure to extension education. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of farm hospitality practices. Farmers who receive relevant extension information and training may demonstrate better knowledge and greater adoption of practices relating to visitor reception, cleanliness, safety, customer service, accommodation, and recreational activities. The study may also reveal differences in adoption levels based on farmers’ exposure to extension programmes and access to hospitality-related information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agritourism operators, rural development agencies, tourism organisations, government agricultural agencies, and researchers. It may provide information that can assist extension agents in designing appropriate educational programmes for farmers interested in farm hospitality and agritourism. The findings may also support farmers in improving visitor experiences, strengthening farm-based enterprises, and creating additional income opportunities through hospitality-related activities. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of knowledge and skills for improving farmers’ adoption of farm hospitality practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes incorporate practical education on farm hospitality, visitor management, customer service, cleanliness, safety, and basic accommodation standards to support farmers involved in farm-based tourism activities.
