Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Fertilizer Microdosing
Abstract
Fertilizer microdosing is an agricultural nutrient management practice that involves applying small, measured quantities of fertilizer directly near crop plants or in targeted locations to improve nutrient availability and fertilizer-use efficiency. The practice can help farmers make efficient use of limited fertilizer resources, reduce nutrient losses, lower input costs, and improve crop growth. Extension education can provide farmers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand and apply fertilizer microdosing techniques appropriately. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of fertilizer microdosing. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education and determine how such education influences their knowledge and adoption of recommended fertilizer microdosing practices. The study will also examine the extent to which farmers apply information obtained through extension education in their crop production activities. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of fertilizer measurement, appropriate application rates, fertilizer placement, timing of application, distance from crop plants, suitable fertilizer types, soil and crop requirements, and repeated application where necessary. Attention will also be given to extension education activities such as practical demonstrations, farmer training, farm visits, field days, group meetings, and distribution of technical information. These activities may improve farmers’ understanding and application of fertilizer microdosing practices. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and adoption assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of fertilizer microdosing. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to extension education may demonstrate higher adoption of fertilizer microdosing practices. Extension education may improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate fertilizer quantities, placement methods, application timing, and crop nutrient requirements. However, limited access to extension agents, inadequate practical demonstrations, difficulty in measuring small fertilizer quantities, limited fertilizer availability, and farmers’ reliance on conventional application methods may constrain effective adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, fertilizer suppliers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on the role of extension education in promoting efficient fertilizer management and identify challenges affecting farmers’ adoption of fertilizer microdosing. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing practical training programmes that promote efficient fertilizer use among smallholder farmers. The study concludes that extension education can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of fertilizer microdosing practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen practical training, organize field demonstrations on fertilizer microdosing, provide farmers with appropriate measurement and application guidance, and increase access to reliable fertilizer management information. These measures can promote efficient fertilizer use, reduce unnecessary nutrient losses, improve crop performance, and support sustainable agricultural production.
