Effect of Extension Education on Farmers’ Adoption of Produce Quality Inspection Practices

Abstract

Produce quality inspection is an important postharvest practice that helps farmers identify damaged, contaminated, immature, overripe, diseased, or otherwise unsuitable agricultural produce before storage, transportation, and marketing. Proper inspection can help maintain product quality, reduce postharvest losses, improve consumer safety, and increase the market value of agricultural products. Extension education can provide farmers with relevant knowledge and practical skills for identifying quality defects and applying appropriate inspection procedures during postharvest handling. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of produce quality inspection practices. It will assess the extent to which extension education improves farmers’ knowledge and use of recommended produce inspection procedures. The study will also determine the influence of extension training, demonstrations, advisory visits, and information dissemination on farmers’ adoption of practices such as visual inspection, sorting, defect identification, removal of damaged produce, quality grading, and routine inspection before storage and marketing. The study will focus on extension education, farmers’ knowledge of produce quality inspection, quality assessment, defect identification, sorting, grading, produce cleanliness, damage detection, contamination identification, postharvest handling, food safety, produce quality, and adoption of inspection practices. It will also assess farmers’ sources of quality inspection information and determine the extent to which agricultural extension agents provide practical guidance on identifying and managing quality problems in harvested produce. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension education, knowledge of produce quality inspection, and level of adoption of recommended inspection practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of produce quality inspection practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of produce quality inspection practices. Farmers who receive regular training and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater ability to identify damaged, contaminated, immature, diseased, and poor-quality produce and may be more likely to inspect and sort produce before storage and marketing. The level of adoption may also vary according to farmers’ frequency of extension contact, type of produce handled, access to inspection tools, and availability of postharvest facilities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, postharvest specialists, produce marketers, agricultural cooperatives, food safety authorities, government agricultural agencies, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote quality inspection and improved postharvest management. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ ability to identify quality defects and maintain acceptable standards for agricultural produce. The study concludes that extension education can contribute to improved adoption of produce quality inspection practices by increasing farmers’ knowledge and practical skills in postharvest quality assessment. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular training and demonstrations on produce inspection, defect identification, sorting, grading, contamination detection, and quality monitoring. Farmers should also be encouraged to conduct systematic inspections before storage, transportation, and marketing to reduce losses and improve the quality and market value of agricultural produce.
