Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Agricultural Market Diversification

Abstract

Agricultural market diversification involves the adoption of different market outlets, buyers, and marketing channels by farmers to reduce dependence on a single market and improve opportunities for selling agricultural products. Market diversification can help farmers respond to changing market conditions, access different customer groups, reduce marketing risks, and improve the stability of farm income. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with market information, advisory support, and practical guidance that may improve their ability to identify and utilise diverse agricultural markets. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of agricultural market diversification. It will assess how access to extension services influences farmers’ decisions to use multiple market outlets and marketing channels for their agricultural products. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers adopt market diversification practices and identify the types of market opportunities accessed by farmers. The study will focus on extension services, market information, direct marketing, cooperative marketing, contract marketing, digital agricultural marketplaces, institutional buyers, agro-processors, wholesalers, retailers, and local markets. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of alternative buyers, market requirements, pricing information, customer demand, transportation considerations, and other factors that influence decisions to diversify agricultural market outlets. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and adoption of agricultural market diversification practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of market diversification. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of agricultural market diversification. Farmers who receive regular extension information may demonstrate greater use of multiple market outlets, including cooperative, direct, institutional, contract, and digital marketing channels. The findings may also indicate that timely market information and advisory support improve farmers’ awareness of alternative buyers and enable them to respond more effectively to changes in market demand and prices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural cooperatives, agribusiness organisations, produce marketers, government agricultural agencies, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that incorporate agricultural marketing and market development. The findings may also assist farmers in reducing dependence on individual markets, expanding their customer base, improving market access, and strengthening the stability of their agricultural enterprises. The study concludes that extension services can play an important role in improving farmers’ adoption of agricultural market diversification practices. It is therefore recommended that extension programmes provide farmers with practical information on alternative market channels, buyer identification, market requirements, pricing, digital marketing, cooperative marketing, and contract arrangements. Extension agents should also provide timely market information and advisory support to help farmers explore diverse markets and improve the sustainability of their farm enterprises.
