Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Evaporative Cooling Technologies for Vegetables

Abstract

Sesame production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to food supply, income generation, employment, and agricultural diversification. Intercropping sesame with compatible crops can provide opportunities for efficient use of farmland, labour, soil nutrients, moisture, and other farm resources. However, successful intercropping requires appropriate knowledge of crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, nutrient management, and weed control. Extension education can provide farmers with the information and practical skills needed to adopt suitable sesame intercropping practices. This study will examine the effect of extension education on farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to extension education, determine their knowledge of recommended intercropping techniques, and examine the extent to which extension education influences their adoption of improved sesame intercropping practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of information provided to sesame farmers. The study will focus on extension education, sesame intercropping practices, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, crop combination, planting arrangement, spacing, planting time, soil fertility management, weed management, moisture conservation, crop competition, and adoption of recommended intercropping techniques. Information will be obtained from sesame farmers to determine their exposure to extension education and the extent to which the knowledge acquired is applied in their farming activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected sesame farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between extension education and farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension education may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended sesame intercropping practices. Farmers who receive regular training, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, planting schedules, and resource management practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact contributes to farmers’ ability to manage crop competition and apply recommended intercropping techniques. The study will be useful to sesame farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting efficient sesame-based intercropping systems. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in selecting and managing suitable crop combinations. The study concludes that extension education is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of sesame intercropping practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and follow-up advisory services on sesame intercropping. Extension programmes should emphasize suitable crop combinations, planting arrangements, spacing, timing, weed management, and efficient resource use to support sustainable sesame production.
