Effect of Extension Services on Farmers’ Adoption of Noise Safety Practices During Farm Operations

Abstract

Noise exposure is a potential occupational hazard in agricultural activities, particularly during the operation of tractors, generators, processing machines, milling equipment, irrigation pumps, and other powered farm machinery. Prolonged exposure to excessive noise may affect farmers’ comfort, concentration, communication, and hearing health. Agricultural extension services can provide farmers with information and practical guidance on identifying noise hazards, using appropriate protective equipment, maintaining machinery, and adopting safer work practices during noisy farm operations. This study will examine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of noise safety practices during farm operations. It will assess the extent to which agricultural extension services improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended measures for reducing exposure to excessive farm noise. The study will also determine the influence of extension education, advisory visits, training programmes, and demonstrations on farmers’ use of hearing protection and other appropriate noise safety practices. The study will focus on extension services, farmers’ knowledge of noise hazards, noise safety practices, hearing protection, machinery operation, equipment maintenance, exposure duration, safe working procedures, occupational safety, and adoption of recommended farm safety measures. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on noise-related risks and determine the extent to which extension agents provide guidance on reducing noise exposure during the use of agricultural machinery and processing equipment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension services, knowledge of noise-related hazards, and adoption of recommended noise safety practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on farmers’ adoption of noise safety practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on farmers’ adoption of noise safety practices during farm operations. Farmers who receive regular extension education and practical demonstrations may demonstrate greater awareness and use of hearing protection, appropriate machinery operating procedures, equipment maintenance practices, and measures for reducing prolonged exposure to excessive noise. Adoption may also vary according to farmers’ frequency of machinery use, access to protective equipment, and exposure to agricultural safety information. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural machinery operators, agricultural development agencies, occupational safety organisations, farmer cooperatives, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that address occupational hazards associated with agricultural machinery. The findings may also assist relevant agencies in developing practical safety education programmes that promote hearing protection and safer working conditions during noisy farm operations. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improved adoption of noise safety practices by increasing farmers’ awareness of noise-related hazards and promoting appropriate protective measures. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies include noise safety education in farmer training programmes, promote the use of appropriate hearing protection, encourage regular machinery maintenance, and provide practical guidance on reducing prolonged exposure to excessive farm noise. These measures may contribute to safer agricultural working conditions and improved occupational safety.
