Effect of Extension Services on Fish Farmers’ Adoption of Fingerling Quality Selection

Abstract

Fingerling quality selection involves the identification and selection of healthy, vigorous, and suitable young fish for stocking in aquaculture production systems. The quality of fingerlings can influence survival, growth performance, feed utilisation, disease resistance, and overall productivity of fish farms. Appropriate fingerling selection is therefore important for successful aquaculture production, while inadequate knowledge or poor selection practices may result in weak stock, poor growth, and increased production losses. Agricultural extension services can provide fish farmers with technical information and practical guidance on selecting quality fingerlings. This study will examine the effect of extension services on fish farmers’ adoption of fingerling quality selection practices. It will assess how access to extension services influences fish farmers’ knowledge and application of recommended methods for identifying and selecting suitable fingerlings. The study will also determine the extent to which fish farmers adopt appropriate fingerling selection practices in their aquaculture enterprises. The study will focus on extension services, fingerling health, size uniformity, physical appearance, swimming activity, body condition, disease signs, stocking suitability, source of fingerlings, species characteristics, and quality assessment practices. It will also examine farmers’ exposure to extension advice on fingerling selection and the extent to which such information supports improved stocking decisions and aquaculture management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected fish farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ access to extension services and adoption of fingerling quality selection practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the effect of extension services on fish farmers’ adoption of fingerling quality selection practices. The study is expected to reveal that extension services may have a significant effect on fish farmers’ adoption of fingerling quality selection practices. Fish farmers who receive relevant extension information may demonstrate greater use of health assessment, size selection, physical examination, activity assessment, and other recommended methods for identifying quality fingerlings. The findings may also indicate that regular extension contact and practical demonstrations improve farmers’ ability to make appropriate stocking decisions. The study will be useful to fish farmers, agricultural extension agents, aquaculture practitioners, fish hatchery operators, fisheries development agencies, government institutions, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote improved fingerling selection and aquaculture management. The findings may also assist fish farmers in reducing stocking losses, improving fish survival and growth, and increasing the productivity and sustainability of aquaculture enterprises. The study concludes that extension services can contribute to improving fish farmers’ adoption of appropriate fingerling quality selection practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes provide practical training on fingerling health assessment, size uniformity, physical condition, disease identification, species selection, and appropriate stocking procedures. Extension agents should also encourage fish farmers to obtain fingerlings from reliable sources and apply recommended quality selection practices before stocking their production facilities.
