Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Adoption of Intergenerational Farm Management Practices

Abstract

Intergenerational farm management practices involve the transfer and continuation of farming skills, knowledge, responsibilities, decision-making practices, and management approaches between older and younger generations within farming families. These practices are important for maintaining continuity in family farming and ensuring that valuable agricultural knowledge and management experience are passed from one generation to another. Extension training can provide farmers with relevant information and practical skills that support effective intergenerational farm management and encourage the continued application of useful farming practices. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ adoption of intergenerational farm management practices. It will assess farmers’ exposure to extension training and determine the extent to which they adopt practices that promote the transfer of farm management knowledge and responsibilities between generations. The study will also examine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of intergenerational farm management practices. The study will focus on extension training on farm planning, decision-making, record keeping, resource management, farm budgeting, technology use, knowledge transfer, task sharing, leadership transition, and preparation of younger family members for farm management responsibilities. It will also examine farmers’ participation in training programmes, demonstrations, workshops, field activities, and other extension education programmes related to family farm management and succession. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their exposure to extension training and adoption of intergenerational farm management practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ adoption of intergenerational management practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular and relevant extension training may demonstrate greater adoption of intergenerational farm management practices. Training may improve farmers’ understanding of knowledge sharing, joint decision-making, task allocation, record keeping, resource management, and preparation of younger family members for future management responsibilities. However, generational differences, limited training opportunities, inadequate extension coverage, family disagreements, resistance to changes in management practices, and limited participation of younger family members may constrain adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farming families, agricultural researchers, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on how extension training can support the transfer of farm management knowledge and responsibilities across generations. The findings may also assist extension organisations in developing family-oriented training programmes that strengthen cooperation between older and younger farmers and promote continuity in agricultural enterprises. The study concludes that extension training can contribute to farmers’ adoption of intergenerational farm management practices by improving knowledge sharing, cooperation, planning, and preparation for management transition. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen family-oriented training through farm management workshops, practical demonstrations, joint learning activities, advisory visits, and programmes that encourage interaction and knowledge exchange between older and younger farmers.
