Effect of Extension Training on Farmers’ Use of Mobile-Based Farm Management Records

Abstract

Mobile-based farm management records are increasingly being used to support the recording, storage, and management of agricultural information. Mobile phones and farm management applications can enable farmers to maintain records of farm activities, production expenses, input use, labour, sales, yields, and other important farm information. However, farmers may require appropriate knowledge and practical guidance to use these digital tools effectively. Extension training can therefore play an important role in improving farmers’ ability to adopt and use mobile-based farm management records. This study will examine the effect of extension training on farmers’ use of mobile-based farm management records. It will assess the extent to which farmers are exposed to extension training on mobile record-keeping tools and determine how such training influences their use of digital records for managing farm activities. The study will also examine the frequency and nature of extension training received by farmers and the extent to which farmers use mobile-based records in their daily farm management activities. The study will focus on extension training related to mobile farm management applications, digital record-keeping procedures, farm expense recording, input tracking, labour records, production records, sales records, yield documentation, and storage of farm information. Farmers’ use of mobile-based records will be assessed based on the frequency, consistency, and range of farm activities for which digital records are maintained. Access to mobile devices, exposure to agricultural information, and availability of extension support will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and relevant farm management records. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between extension training and farmers’ use of mobile-based farm management records, while comparative analysis may be used to examine differences among farmers with varying levels of training exposure. The study is expected to reveal that extension training may have a positive effect on farmers’ use of mobile-based farm management records. Farmers who receive regular and practical training may be more likely to use mobile applications for recording farm expenses, inputs, labour, production, sales, and yields than farmers with limited training exposure. The study may also reveal that the effectiveness of training depends on the practical nature of the instruction, farmers’ access to suitable mobile devices, and their ability to understand and operate digital record-keeping applications. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, digital agriculture providers, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing extension programmes that promote digital farm management and improve farmers’ record-keeping practices. The findings may also assist extension organizations in developing practical training materials and demonstrations that encourage farmers to use mobile technologies for more efficient farm information management. The study concludes that extension training is an important consideration in promoting farmers’ use of mobile-based farm management records and strengthening digital farm management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide regular, practical, and farmer-oriented training on the use of mobile record-keeping applications. Extension agents should also provide follow-up support and demonstrations to help farmers overcome difficulties associated with digital record keeping and encourage consistent use of mobile-based farm management records.
