EFFECT OF EMPLOYEE DISCIPLINE ON ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA BOTTLING COMPANY PLC, IKEJA LAGOS
ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of employee discipline on organizational performance in Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, Ikeja, Lagos. The research was motivated by the increasing need for organizations to maintain discipline among employees in order to enhance productivity, efficiency, and achievement of organizational goals. The study aimed to assess the relationship between employee discipline and organizational performance, identify disciplinary practices adopted by the organization, and examine challenges affecting effective discipline management in the workplace. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population comprised management staff and employees of Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, Ikeja, Lagos. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews, while secondary data were obtained from textbooks, journals, company reports, and related literature. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, mean scores, and inferential analysis to determine the relationship between employee discipline and organizational performance. Findings revealed that employee discipline has a significant positive effect on organizational performance. The study found that effective disciplinary measures such as adherence to organizational rules, punctuality, accountability, compliance with work ethics, and proper supervision contribute to increased employee productivity, improved job performance, reduced workplace conflicts, and enhanced organizational efficiency. The findings also indicated that organizations with effective disciplinary systems experience higher employee commitment and better achievement of organizational objectives. However, challenges such as inconsistent enforcement of disciplinary policies, poor communication, favoritism, inadequate motivation, and resistance to organizational rules were identified as factors affecting effective discipline management. The study concluded that employee discipline is a critical factor in achieving organizational performance and sustainable business success. It recommended that organizations should establish clear disciplinary policies, ensure fair and consistent enforcement of workplace rules, promote effective communication, and provide employee motivation and training programs to strengthen discipline and improve organizational outcomes.
