INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN RAISING AWARENESS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN LAGOS
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Domestic violence remains a pervasive issue globally, with significant consequences for victims, families, and society at large (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). In Lagos, Nigeria, domestic violence has been reported as a critical social problem, affecting individuals across different socioeconomic backgrounds (Adebayo & Oladipo, 2020). Despite efforts by government and non-governmental organizations to curb this menace, many cases go unreported due to cultural stigma, fear of retaliation, and lack of awareness (Oyediran & Isiugo-Abanihe, 2018). Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for raising awareness on social issues, including domestic violence, by facilitating real-time information dissemination and fostering public discourse (Omenugha & Uzuegbunam, 2018).
The rise of digital platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (now X), Instagram, and WhatsApp has transformed how information is shared and consumed in Nigeria (Ajaero et al., 2019). These platforms provide a space for advocacy, allowing survivors and activists to share experiences, mobilize support, and demand policy changes (Onyejegbu & Asemah, 2020). Campaigns such as #StopGBV and #MeToo have gained traction in Nigeria, highlighting the role of social media in amplifying voices against gender-based violence (Akinfemisoye & Mekonnen, 2021). Studies indicate that social media campaigns increase public knowledge about domestic violence, encourage reporting, and influence policy reforms (Ezeah et al., 2020).
However, while social media has been instrumental in raising awareness, challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and digital divide persist (Nwachukwu & Eze, 2019). Some critics argue that online activism does not always translate to tangible action, as many victims still face barriers in accessing justice (Adibe et al., 2021). Additionally, cultural norms in Nigeria often discourage public discussions on domestic violence, limiting the effectiveness of online campaigns (Odoemelam & Nwafor, 2022). Despite these challenges, social media remains a critical platform for advocacy, providing a voice to marginalized groups and fostering community engagement (Ibrahim & Abdulkareem, 2021).
This study seeks to explore the influence of social media in raising awareness about domestic violence in Lagos, considering both its potential benefits and limitations. By analyzing the role of digital platforms in shaping public perception and policy responses, this research contributes to the broader discourse on technology and social change (Okeke et al., 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite increased advocacy efforts, domestic violence remains a significant problem in Lagos, with many cases unreported due to fear, stigma, and lack of awareness (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2020). While social media has been widely used to raise awareness, its actual impact on changing attitudes, improving reporting mechanisms, and influencing policy interventions remains understudied (Adeyemi & Ojo, 2022). There is a need to assess how effectively social media campaigns translate into real-world actions and whether they contribute to reducing domestic violence cases in Lagos (Olanrewaju et al., 2021).
