CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Gender issues have remained an important topic in literature because they reflect how societies treat men and women differently, especially in areas such as power, identity, and access to opportunities (UN Women, 2023). Literature from Africa often explores these issues in ways that connect deeply with cultural traditions and social realities, making it a useful tool for understanding gender relations (Achebe & Okuyade, 2021). In recent years, scholars have shown increased interest in examining how female writers use fiction to challenge harmful norms and highlight the experiences of women in patriarchal societies (Adjei, 2022). This growing attention is important because gender inequality continues to affect many aspects of life, including education, employment, and personal freedom (World Bank, 2024).

The novel Faceless by Amma Darko is one of the literary works that strongly addresses gender issues in contemporary African society. The story focuses on the lives of vulnerable girls living on the streets and exposes the harsh realities they face, including abuse, neglect, and exploitation (Darko, 2003). Although the novel was written earlier, it continues to be relevant today because many of the issues it highlights are still present in modern societies (Osei, 2021). Researchers have noted that the portrayal of female characters in such texts helps readers understand how systemic inequalities affect women differently from men (Mensah, 2022).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine gender representation in Faceless by Amma Darko.

Specific objectives include;

      i.         To evaluate the impact of gender inequality on female characters in the novel.

    ii.         To determine how societal structures influence gender roles in the story.

   iii.         To find out how the novel portrays power relations between male and female characters.

1.4 Research Questions

      i.         What is the impact of gender inequality on female characters in Faceless?

    ii.         What is the role of societal structures in shaping gender roles in the novel?

   iii.         How does the novel portray power relations between male and female characters?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I
H0: There is no significant impact of gender inequality on female characters in Faceless.
H1: There is a significant impact of gender inequality on female characters in Faceless.

Hypothesis II
H0: There is no significant relationship between societal structures and gender roles in the novel.
H2: There is a significant relationship between societal structures and gender roles in the novel.

Hypothesis III
H0: There is no significant portrayal of power imbalance between male and female characters in the novel.
H3: There is a significant portrayal of power imbalance between male and female characters in the novel.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important because it helps to increase understanding of gender issues as presented in African literature. By analyzing Faceless, readers can gain insight into the challenges faced by women and girls in society, especially those who are vulnerable. The study also contributes to academic discussions on gender equality and encourages further research in this area.

In addition, the findings of this study can be useful to students, researchers, and policymakers. It can help educators use literature as a tool to teach about gender issues and social justice. It may also provide useful information for organizations working to improve the lives of women and children.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on a gender analysis of Faceless by Amma Darko. It examines how gender roles, inequality, and power relations are presented in the novel. The analysis is limited to the themes, characters, and events within the text.

The study does not cover other works by Amma Darko or other authors. It also does not include a comparative analysis with other novels. The focus is strictly on understanding gender issues within Faceless.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

One limitation of this study is that it relies mainly on textual analysis, which may be subjective. Different readers may interpret the same text in different ways, which can affect the conclusions drawn.

Another limitation is the availability of recent scholarly materials specifically focused on Faceless. While general studies on gender and African literature are available, fewer recent works focus directly on this novel.
