Effect of Self-Esteem Education on Self-Esteem Levels among Adolescents in Nigeria

Abstract

Self-esteem is an important psychological and social factor in adolescent development and may influence young people's confidence, emotional wellbeing, interpersonal relationships, academic engagement, decision-making, and ability to cope with developmental challenges. Adolescents in Nigeria may experience academic pressures, peer influence, family expectations, social comparison, bullying, body-image concerns, financial difficulties, and other social and emotional challenges that may negatively affect their self-esteem. Low self-esteem may be associated with social withdrawal, reduced confidence, poor academic engagement, emotional difficulties, and vulnerability to negative peer influence. Self-esteem education provides an opportunity to equip adolescents with knowledge and practical skills for developing positive self-perceptions, recognizing personal strengths, challenging negative self-beliefs, building confidence, developing healthy interpersonal relationships, and responding constructively to criticism and social pressures. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of self-esteem education on self-esteem levels among adolescents in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, Self-Concept Theory, and the Self-Determination Theory. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of self-efficacy, observational learning, social interaction, reinforcement, and environmental influences in shaping adolescents' perceptions of themselves and their behaviours. Self-Concept Theory explains how individuals develop perceptions and evaluations of themselves through personal experiences, social interactions, feedback, and comparison with others. Self-Determination Theory emphasizes the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in supporting healthy psychological development and positive self-perception. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how self-esteem education may influence self-esteem levels among adolescents in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adolescents enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools and communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible adolescents. Self-esteem education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, training frequency and duration, self-awareness, recognition of personal strengths, positive self-talk, identification and challenging of negative self-beliefs, confidence building, body-image awareness, resilience, goal setting, interpersonal communication, assertiveness, decision-making, coping with criticism, peer-pressure management, social comparison awareness, and practical self-esteem development exercises. Self-esteem levels will be assessed using validated self-esteem assessment instruments and indicators such as self-worth, self-acceptance, self-confidence, perceived competence, positive self-perception, sense of personal value, emotional confidence, social confidence, and ability to cope with challenges. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated self-esteem instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize adolescents' demographic, socioeconomic, and educational characteristics, exposure to self-esteem education, and self-esteem levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of self-esteem education on self-esteem levels. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that self-esteem education has a significant positive effect on self-esteem levels among adolescents in Nigeria. Adolescents exposed to structured self-esteem education are expected to demonstrate improved self-worth, self-confidence, self-acceptance, perceived competence, and positive self-perception compared with their baseline levels or adolescents without similar educational exposure. Education may help adolescents identify personal strengths, challenge negative self-beliefs, develop positive self-talk, manage social comparison, respond constructively to criticism, resist negative peer influence, and build confidence in academic and social situations. Interactive approaches involving group discussions, role-playing, peer activities, reflective exercises, goal-setting activities, and strengths-based learning may strengthen the effectiveness of self-esteem education. Conversely, bullying, family conflict, negative peer relationships, social comparison, unrealistic social expectations, body-image concerns, academic pressures, and limited access to counselling services may reduce the effectiveness and sustainability of self-esteem education. The study therefore expects accessible, age-appropriate, culturally appropriate, practical, and sustained self-esteem education to contribute significantly to improved self-esteem levels among adolescents in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on self-esteem education, adolescent self-esteem, adolescent psychological wellbeing, positive self-concept, youth development, mental health promotion, health education, school health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education and health, secondary schools, school counsellors, psychologists, teachers, parents, youth organizations, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthy psychological development among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating self-esteem education into school health and adolescent development programmes, strengthening school counselling services, promoting positive peer relationships, addressing bullying and social comparison, supporting parents and teachers in promoting healthy self-esteem, and establishing sustainable adolescent mental health promotion programmes across Nigeria.
