Impact of Fitness Education on Physical-Activity Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Physical inactivity is an important public health concern among university students in Nigeria and may be associated with increased risk of overweight and obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, poor physical fitness, and other non-communicable health conditions. University students may experience prolonged sitting, academic workload, extensive screen use, limited access to recreational facilities, transportation dependence, and other lifestyle factors that may reduce participation in regular physical activity. Fitness education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of the health benefits of physical activity, recommended activity levels, appropriate exercise techniques, injury prevention, and practical strategies for incorporating physical activity into daily routines. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of fitness education on physical-activity practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to health problems associated with physical inactivity, perceived severity, perceived benefits of physical activity, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence their physical-activity practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, social support, and environmental factors in shaping physical-activity behaviour. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes attitudes toward physical activity, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions as determinants of students' exercise and activity practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how fitness education may influence physical-activity practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Fitness education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to fitness education sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on physical-activity benefits, recommended activity levels, aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, flexibility exercises, warm-up and cool-down procedures, exercise safety, injury prevention, sedentary behaviour reduction, goal setting, exercise planning, and appropriate use of recreational or fitness facilities. Physical-activity practices will be assessed using indicators such as frequency, duration, and intensity of physical activity, participation in moderate- and vigorous-intensity activities, walking, active transportation, recreational exercise, sports participation, muscle-strengthening activities, reduction of prolonged sitting, use of campus recreational facilities, and consistency of physical-activity participation. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized physical-activity assessment tools, fitness-practice checklists, activity diaries or logs where appropriate, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, sedentary behaviour, sources of fitness information, education exposure, and physical-activity patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of fitness education on physical-activity practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, physical-activity practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that fitness education has a significant positive impact on physical-activity practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, evidence-based, and sustained fitness education are expected to demonstrate greater participation in regular physical activity than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' knowledge of recommended activity levels, appropriate exercise choices, safe exercise techniques, and strategies for incorporating physical activity into academic and daily routines. Practical demonstrations and activity-based sessions may increase students' confidence and self-efficacy while reducing perceived barriers to exercise. Fitness education may also encourage students to reduce prolonged sitting, increase walking and active transportation where feasible, and make greater use of available recreational facilities. However, academic workload, limited recreational infrastructure, financial constraints, safety concerns, lack of time, social influences, sedentary lifestyles, and limited access to suitable exercise facilities may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, student-centred, and sustained fitness education, supported by an enabling campus environment, to contribute significantly to improved physical-activity practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on physical activity, fitness education, university student health, sedentary behaviour, non-communicable disease prevention, health promotion, exercise, obesity prevention, cardiovascular health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university health centres, sports and recreation departments, student organizations, public health practitioners, fitness professionals, healthcare providers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting active lifestyles among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating fitness education into university health programmes, improving access to recreational and exercise facilities, promoting active transportation and walking, reducing prolonged sedentary behaviour, organizing campus physical-activity programmes, and developing sustainable university-based interventions that promote regular physical activity and long-term health among students across Nigeria.
