Effect of Investment Education on Investment Evaluation Skills among Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Investment evaluation is an important financial competency for Accounting Education students because accounting and finance professionals are often required to assess investment opportunities, compare alternative investments, interpret financial information, evaluate risks and returns, and support sound financial decisions. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited practical exposure to investment analysis and may experience difficulties applying theoretical knowledge to real-world investment decisions. Investment Education provides students with structured knowledge and practical learning experiences relating to investment instruments, investment objectives, risk, return, financial analysis, and investment decision-making. Such education may improve students’ ability to evaluate investment opportunities and make informed financial judgments. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Investment Education on investment evaluation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Human Capital Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical investment competencies through experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of acquiring relevant knowledge and skills in improving students’ productivity, employability, and professional competence. Social Cognitive Theory explains how observation, modelling, guided practice, feedback, and self-efficacy may influence students’ ability to understand and apply investment evaluation techniques. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Investment Education may influence investment evaluation skills among Accounting Education students. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Investment Education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to investment concepts, investment objectives, investment instruments, shares, bonds, treasury securities, mutual funds, fixed-income investments, investment portfolios, risk and return concepts, diversification, investment information, financial-market information, investment analysis, financial statement interpretation, investment appraisal techniques, time value of money, present value, future value, investment risk assessment, return estimation, profitability analysis, liquidity assessment, solvency assessment, market analysis, economic analysis, industry analysis, company analysis, fundamental analysis, technical analysis, investment comparison, investment alternatives, investment decision-making, investment planning, investment simulation, case studies, practical investment exercises, financial-data analysis, investment-report interpretation, investment research, investment information sources, investment fraud awareness, financial literacy, ethical investment practices, and investor protection. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Investment Education, investment knowledge, and investment evaluation skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of Investment Education on students’ investment evaluation skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, investment evaluation skill scores before and after exposure to Investment Education may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Investment Education has a significant positive effect on investment evaluation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. Students exposed to structured Investment Education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify, analyse, compare, and evaluate investment opportunities. Education on investment objectives may improve students’ ability to align investment choices with financial goals. Exposure to different investment instruments may strengthen students’ understanding of shares, bonds, treasury securities, mutual funds, and other investment alternatives. Risk-and-return education may improve students’ ability to assess the relationship between potential returns and investment risks. Portfolio-management activities may strengthen students’ understanding of diversification and risk reduction. Financial-market education may improve students’ ability to interpret market information and economic developments. Financial-statement analysis may strengthen students’ ability to use accounting information when evaluating companies and investment opportunities. Investment appraisal exercises may improve students’ ability to apply relevant techniques when comparing alternative investments. Time-value-of-money activities may strengthen students’ understanding of present and future values. Return-estimation exercises may improve students’ ability to assess potential investment performance. Profitability, liquidity, and solvency analysis may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate the financial position of investment opportunities. Economic, industry, and company analysis may improve students’ ability to consider broader factors affecting investment decisions. Fundamental-analysis activities may strengthen students’ ability to evaluate investment opportunities using financial and business information. Basic technical-analysis activities may improve students’ understanding of market trends and price movements. Investment-comparison exercises may strengthen students’ ability to rank alternative opportunities according to relevant criteria. Investment decision-making activities may improve students’ confidence in selecting appropriate investment alternatives. Investment planning activities may strengthen students’ ability to develop structured investment strategies. Investment simulations may provide students with opportunities to practise investment evaluation in realistic but controlled environments. Case studies may improve students’ ability to apply investment concepts to practical financial situations. Financial-data analysis may strengthen students’ ability to interpret numerical information when evaluating investments. Investment-report interpretation may improve students’ ability to extract relevant information from financial and investment reports. Investment research activities may strengthen students’ ability to locate and assess investment information. Education on reliable investment-information sources may improve students’ ability to distinguish credible information from misleading investment claims. Investment-fraud awareness may strengthen students’ ability to recognize suspicious investment opportunities and potentially fraudulent schemes. Financial-literacy education may improve students’ understanding of basic investment principles. Ethical-investment education may strengthen students’ awareness of responsible financial decision-making. Investor-protection education may improve students’ understanding of measures available to protect investors. However, the effectiveness of Investment Education may be constrained by inadequate access to current financial-market information, limited investment simulation facilities, insufficient practical investment materials, outdated instructional resources, limited access to financial databases, inadequate lecturer training, large class sizes, limited practical teaching periods, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, limited exposure to investment professionals, insufficient financial-market data, low student participation, and weak integration of practical investment activities into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects practical, structured, current, technology-supported, and adequately supervised Investment Education to contribute significantly to improved investment evaluation skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics.
