Impact of Community-Based Financial Education Projects on Students’ Financial Communication Skills in Nigerian Polytechnics

Abstract

Financial communication skills are important competencies for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals are expected to explain financial information clearly, communicate with clients and community members, present financial concepts in understandable language, and support informed financial decision-making. However, Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics may have limited opportunities to apply their classroom knowledge in practical community settings where they are required to communicate financial information to individuals with different levels of financial knowledge and experience. Community-Based Financial Education Projects provide students with opportunities to participate in practical financial education activities within communities while developing their ability to communicate financial concepts, respond to financial enquiries, simplify technical information, and interact professionally with members of the public. Such projects may strengthen students' communication competence and improve their preparedness for accounting-related workplace responsibilities. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Community-Based Financial Education Projects on students’ financial communication skills in Nigerian polytechnics. The study will be anchored on Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Human Capital Theory. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students develop practical competencies through direct experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, modelling, interaction, feedback, and self-efficacy. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in relevant knowledge and practical skills improves students’ productivity, employability, and professional competence. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Community-Based Financial Education Projects may influence students’ financial communication skills. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian polytechnics. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, polytechnics, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial communication skills assessment scales, community-project participation records, practical communication tasks, presentation exercises, observation checklists, communication-performance rubrics, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Community-Based Financial Education Projects will be assessed using indicators such as community financial education planning, community needs assessment, financial-topic selection, preparation of educational materials, development of financial messages, financial concept explanation, budgeting education, savings education, expense-management education, record-keeping education, basic bookkeeping education, personal financial planning education, financial goal-setting education, financial decision-making education, consumer financial awareness, financial documentation education, financial literacy presentations, group financial education sessions, individual financial counselling activities, community workshops, public presentations, financial demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, community discussions, financial storytelling, practical financial examples, use of simplified accounting language, use of visual aids, use of charts and illustrations, use of practical examples, use of local contexts, use of digital communication tools, financial education leaflets, brochures, posters, handouts, educational videos, presentations, online financial education materials, social-media financial education, community outreach, stakeholder engagement, participant interaction, feedback collection, follow-up activities, financial-information verification, use of reliable financial information, ethical communication, confidentiality, respectful communication, cultural sensitivity, professional conduct, teamwork, leadership, project coordination, time management, documentation of project activities, reporting of project outcomes, reflective learning, peer assessment, lecturer supervision, and community-participant feedback. Students’ financial communication skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to explain financial concepts clearly, communicate accounting information accurately, simplify technical financial terminology, present financial information logically, communicate with individuals with different levels of financial knowledge, respond appropriately to financial questions, provide understandable financial explanations, deliver financial presentations, conduct financial education sessions, communicate budgeting concepts, explain savings principles, explain expense-management procedures, explain basic bookkeeping principles, discuss personal financial planning, explain financial goal-setting, support financial decision-making, communicate consumer-financial information, explain financial documentation procedures, communicate record-keeping principles, present financial information verbally, communicate financial information in writing, prepare financial educational materials, use appropriate financial terminology, use simple language when necessary, use examples effectively, use charts and illustrations effectively, use visual aids appropriately, use digital communication tools, communicate through presentations, communicate through educational leaflets, communicate through brochures, communicate through posters, communicate through handouts, communicate through educational videos, communicate through online materials, communicate through social-media platforms, interact effectively with community members, listen actively, ask appropriate questions, respond to enquiries, clarify misunderstandings, provide relevant information, maintain professional etiquette, demonstrate confidence, demonstrate empathy, demonstrate patience, demonstrate respect, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, maintain confidentiality, communicate ethically, work collaboratively, coordinate group activities, demonstrate leadership, manage project time, document communication activities, prepare project reports, receive feedback, respond to feedback, reflect on communication experiences, and demonstrate overall financial communication competence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, participation in Community-Based Financial Education Projects, community engagement experiences, and financial communication skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Community-Based Financial Education Projects on students’ financial communication skills. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial communication skill scores before and after participation in community-based projects may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional classroom instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Community-Based Financial Education Projects have a significant positive impact on students’ financial communication skills in Nigerian polytechnics. Students who participate in community-based financial education activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to explain financial information, communicate accounting concepts, respond to financial enquiries, deliver presentations, and interact professionally with community members. Community financial education planning may strengthen students’ ability to organize communication activities according to identified community needs. Outcome-reporting activities may strengthen students’ ability to communicate project findings clearly. Reflective learning may encourage students to evaluate and improve their communication performance. Peer assessment may expose students to alternative communication approaches. Lecturer supervision and feedback may help students correct communication weaknesses. Community-participant feedback may provide practical information about the clarity, relevance, and usefulness of students’ financial communication. However, the effectiveness of Community-Based Financial Education Projects may be constrained by inadequate project funding, limited access to communities, transportation difficulties, insufficient educational materials, limited lecturer supervision, inadequate training in community engagement, large student groups, limited project duration, poor internet connectivity, unreliable electricity supply, language barriers, cultural differences, low community participation, limited availability of suitable venues, inadequate digital communication resources, insufficient feedback mechanisms, and weak collaboration between polytechnics and community organizations. The study therefore expects well-planned, practical, community-oriented, adequately supervised, and sustained Community-Based Financial Education Projects to contribute significantly to improved financial communication skills among Accounting Education students in Nigerian polytechnics. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Community-Based Financial Education Projects, financial communication skills, Experiential Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Human Capital Theory, accounting education, practical accounting education, community engagement, financial literacy, financial education, financial communication, public presentations, financial counselling, financial-information dissemination, budgeting education, savings education, expense management, financial record keeping, basic bookkeeping education, personal financial planning, financial decision-making, consumer financial awareness, financial documentation, educational materials, digital financial communication, public speaking, interpersonal communication, professional communication, teamwork, leadership, workplace readiness, employability skills, professional competence, Accounting Education students, Nigerian polytechnics, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Board for Technical Education, polytechnic administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, community organizations, financial-literacy organizations, professional accounting bodies, employers, industry partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students’ financial communication competencies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Community-Based Financial Education Projects into Accounting Education programmes, strengthening community engagement and financial-literacy activities, providing adequate educational and digital communication resources, improving students’ financial presentation and public-speaking skills, incorporating community feedback into practical learning, providing structured supervision and assessment, expanding collaboration between polytechnics and community organizations, and aligning Accounting Education programmes with contemporary financial communication and community-engagement requirements in Nigeria.
