Effect of Digital Financial Reporting on the Quality of Financial Statements of Listed Companies in Nigeria

Abstract

Digital financial reporting has emerged as a transformative innovation in corporate financial reporting, enabling organizations to prepare, process, disclose, and communicate financial information through advanced digital technologies. The increasing adoption of technologies such as eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL), cloud-based accounting systems, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and integrated digital reporting platforms has significantly enhanced the efficiency, accuracy, transparency, timeliness, and accessibility of financial information. Unlike conventional paper-based reporting systems, digital financial reporting facilitates automated financial reporting processes, real-time dissemination of financial information, standardized reporting formats, improved data integrity, and seamless communication between reporting entities, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders. In Nigeria, regulatory institutions such as the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), and the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) have increasingly emphasized the adoption of digital reporting practices to improve corporate transparency, strengthen financial reporting quality, and promote investor confidence. The quality of financial statements remains fundamental to effective corporate governance, accountability, and informed economic decision-making. High-quality financial statements are expected to exhibit relevance, faithful representation, comparability, verifiability, timeliness, and understandability in accordance with the conceptual framework for financial reporting. Although digital financial reporting is expected to improve these qualitative characteristics, challenges such as cybersecurity threats, technological complexity, inadequate digital infrastructure, implementation costs, limited technical expertise, and inconsistent reporting practices continue to affect its effectiveness among listed companies in Nigeria. Despite growing interest in digital reporting technologies, empirical evidence regarding the effect of digital financial reporting on the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria remains limited and inconclusive. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of digital financial reporting on the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Signaling Theory, and the DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model. The Technology Acceptance Model explains that organizations are more likely to adopt digital financial reporting technologies when they perceive them as useful in improving reporting efficiency and easy to integrate into existing accounting systems. Signaling Theory argues that companies adopting advanced digital financial reporting systems communicate positive signals regarding transparency, accountability, sound corporate governance, and financial credibility, thereby enhancing stakeholder confidence in published financial statements. The DeLone and McLean Information Systems Success Model posits that high-quality information systems improve system quality, information quality, user satisfaction, and organizational performance, thereby contributing to improved financial reporting quality. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a comprehensive framework for explaining the relationship between digital financial reporting and the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. The study adopts a quantitative research design using a structured questionnaire administered to chief financial officers, accountants, financial controllers, finance managers, internal auditors, external auditors, compliance officers, company secretaries, information technology personnel, and other professionals responsible for financial reporting within selected companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of respondents from manufacturing, financial services, telecommunications, oil and gas, consumer goods, industrial goods, agriculture, healthcare, and other sectors of the Nigerian economy. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and perceptions regarding digital financial reporting and the quality of financial statements. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the effect of digital financial reporting on financial statement quality. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests, including multicollinearity assessment, common method bias analysis, and model fit indices such as the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA), and Standardized Root Mean Square Residual (SRMR), will be conducted to ensure the adequacy, consistency, reliability, and robustness of the structural model. The study anticipates that digital financial reporting will have a significant positive effect on the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. The adoption of digital financial reporting technologies is expected to improve the accuracy, timeliness, completeness, reliability, comparability, and transparency of financial statements by automating financial reporting processes and reducing manual errors. Digital reporting systems are also anticipated to strengthen internal controls, enhance compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), improve audit readiness, facilitate real-time financial reporting, and increase the credibility of published financial information. Furthermore, organizations effectively implementing digital financial reporting technologies are expected to improve corporate governance, reduce information asymmetry, strengthen stakeholder confidence, enhance regulatory compliance, and increase investor trust in financial statements. Conversely, inadequate digital infrastructure, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, poor system integration, insufficient technical expertise, and weak information technology governance may reduce the effectiveness of digital financial reporting and adversely affect financial statement quality. Consequently, effective implementation of digital financial reporting is expected to contribute significantly to improved financial reporting quality, enhanced corporate transparency, strengthened investor confidence, and sustainable development of Nigeria's capital market. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting, financial reporting, information systems, and corporate governance by providing robust evidence on the relationship between digital financial reporting and the quality of financial statements of listed companies in Nigeria. Unlike previous studies that broadly examined accounting information systems or financial reporting practices, this research specifically evaluates digital financial reporting as a strategic technological innovation influencing financial statement quality using primary data and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The findings will provide valuable insights for the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), listed companies, professional accounting bodies, auditors, investors, policymakers, technology providers, and academic researchers regarding the strategic importance of digital financial reporting in promoting transparent, reliable, and high-quality financial reporting. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening digital reporting infrastructure, enhancing professional capacity in digital reporting technologies, promoting the adoption of XBRL and other digital reporting standards, improving cybersecurity governance, reinforcing regulatory compliance, and fostering sustainable corporate reporting practices in Nigeria.
