EFFECT OF SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTIONS ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Supply chain disruptions have become one of the most significant operational and financial challenges confronting manufacturing firms globally, particularly in emerging economies such as Nigeria. In recent years, disruptions arising from inflationary pressures, exchange rate volatility, insecurity, inadequate transportation infrastructure, fuel subsidy removal, global pandemics, geopolitical conflicts, and fluctuations in the prices of imported raw materials have adversely affected the production and distribution activities of manufacturing firms. These disruptions have resulted in delays in the procurement of raw materials, increased logistics costs, production interruptions, inventory shortages, and declining customer satisfaction, thereby threatening firms' profitability and long-term sustainability. Given the strategic importance of the manufacturing sector in promoting industrialization, employment generation, export earnings, and economic diversification, understanding how supply chain disruptions influence financial performance has become increasingly important. While external disruptions are largely beyond managerial control, organizations can improve their resilience through effective inventory cost management and comprehensive enterprise risk management practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of supply chain disruptions on the financial performance of manufacturing firms in Nigeria while examining the mediating role of inventory cost management and the moderating role of enterprise risk management. The study is anchored on the Resource-Based View (RBV), Contingency Theory, and Enterprise Risk Management Theory. The Resource-Based View posits that organizations possessing superior internal resources and capabilities are better positioned to withstand external shocks and sustain competitive advantage. Contingency Theory explains that organizational performance depends on the ability of management to adapt internal processes and strategies to changing environmental conditions. Enterprise Risk Management Theory emphasizes the importance of systematically identifying, assessing, monitoring, and responding to organizational risks in order to protect corporate value and enhance long-term performance. Guided by these theoretical perspectives, the study seeks to determine the direct effect of supply chain disruptions on the financial performance of manufacturing firms, assess whether inventory cost management mediates this relationship, and examine whether enterprise risk management moderates the influence of supply chain disruptions on financial performance.A quantitative research design will be adopted using a structured questionnaire administered to production managers, supply chain managers, procurement officers, inventory controllers, accountants, finance managers, logistics managers, internal auditors, and senior executives of selected manufacturing firms operating across Nigeria. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of firms from different manufacturing subsectors, including food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, cement, textiles, chemicals, consumer goods, and industrial products. Primary data collected from respondents will be complemented, where appropriate, with secondary information obtained from audited annual reports and financial statements of selected manufacturing firms. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to summarize respondents' demographic characteristics and organizational profiles, while Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the direct, mediating, and moderating relationships among the study variables. The reliability and validity of the measurement model will be assessed using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Additional diagnostic tests will be conducted to evaluate model fit and ensure the robustness of the empirical findings. The study anticipates that supply chain disruptions will have a significant negative effect on the financial performance of manufacturing firms due to increased procurement costs, delayed production schedules, inventory shortages, rising transportation expenses, higher operating costs, reduced sales, and declining profitability. Frequent disruptions are expected to reduce operational efficiency, weaken cash flow, increase production downtime, and impair firms' ability to meet customer demand and maintain competitive market positions. Consequently, firms experiencing severe supply chain disruptions are likely to report lower returns on assets, reduced profit margins, diminished revenue growth, and weakened overall financial performance.Furthermore, inventory cost management is expected to mediate the relationship between supply chain disruptions and financial performance. Effective inventory cost management practices—including inventory optimization, Economic Order Quantity (EOQ), Just-in-Time (JIT) inventory systems, demand forecasting, inventory turnover monitoring, safety stock management, and cost control mechanisms—are anticipated to reduce unnecessary inventory holding costs, minimize stock-outs, improve resource utilization, and enhance operational efficiency. By enabling firms to balance inventory availability with cost efficiency during periods of supply uncertainty, inventory cost management is expected to serve as the mechanism through which the adverse effects of supply chain disruptions on financial performance are mitigated. In addition, enterprise risk management is expected to moderate the relationship between supply chain disruptions and financial performance. Manufacturing firms with well-developed enterprise risk management frameworks characterized by proactive risk identification, comprehensive risk assessment, business continuity planning, supplier diversification, contingency planning, integrated risk monitoring, and effective internal controls are expected to demonstrate greater resilience in managing supply chain disruptions. Strong enterprise risk management practices are likely to reduce the financial consequences of operational disruptions, improve decision-making under uncertainty, strengthen organizational adaptability, and enhance long-term financial stability. Conversely, firms with weak or fragmented risk management systems may experience greater operational losses, prolonged disruptions, increased financial distress, and declining profitability when confronted with supply chain challenges. Therefore, enterprise risk management is expected to strengthen the ability of firms to withstand supply chain disruptions and sustain superior financial performance. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting, operations management, supply chain management, and corporate finance by integrating inventory cost management as a mediating variable and enterprise risk management as a moderating variable into the relationship between supply chain disruptions and financial performance within the Nigerian manufacturing sector. Unlike previous studies that primarily examined the direct impact of supply chain disruptions on organizational performance, this research provides a more comprehensive framework by explaining the operational mechanism through which inventory cost management influences financial outcomes and identifying the organizational conditions that enhance resilience during periods of uncertainty. The findings will provide valuable insights for manufacturing firms, supply chain professionals, policymakers, investors, regulators, accountants, logistics managers, and risk management practitioners regarding the importance of strengthening inventory management systems and enterprise risk management frameworks to mitigate supply chain risks. The study will also offer evidence-based recommendations for improving operational resilience, enhancing cost efficiency, supporting sustainable manufacturing performance, and promoting industrial competitiveness in Nigeria.
