Impact of Digital Payment Adoption on Financial Reporting Efficiency of SMEs in Nigeria: The Mediating Role of Accounting Software Utilization and the Moderating Role of Financial Literacy
Abstract
The rapid advancement of financial technology (FinTech) has transformed the way businesses conduct financial transactions, manage accounting records, and prepare financial reports. In Nigeria, the increasing adoption of digital payment platforms—including mobile banking, internet banking, Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, Quick Response (QR) code payments, electronic fund transfers, and mobile wallets—has significantly reshaped the operational environment of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). These digital payment solutions have enhanced transaction speed, improved business convenience, reduced reliance on cash, and promoted financial inclusion. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has further strengthened this transformation through various initiatives aimed at promoting a cashless economy and expanding digital financial services. Despite these developments, many SMEs continue to experience challenges in maintaining efficient financial reporting systems due to inadequate accounting technology, poor record-keeping practices, limited financial knowledge, and low utilization of digital accounting tools. Consequently, this study investigates the impact of digital payment adoption on the financial reporting efficiency of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, while examining the mediating role of accounting software utilization and the moderating role of financial literacy. The study is anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DOI), and Human Capital Theory. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness and ease of use influence the adoption of digital payment technologies within business organizations. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory provides insight into how technological innovations spread among SMEs and contribute to organizational performance, while Human Capital Theory emphasizes the importance of financial knowledge and managerial competencies in maximizing the benefits derived from technological investments. Guided by these theoretical perspectives, the study seeks to determine the direct impact of digital payment adoption on financial reporting efficiency, assess whether accounting software utilization mediates this relationship, and examine whether financial literacy moderates the influence of digital payment adoption on financial reporting efficiency among SMEs in Nigeria.A quantitative research design will be adopted using a structured questionnaire administered to SME owners, accountants, finance officers, business managers, and other personnel responsible for financial management across selected sectors of the Nigerian economy. A stratified random sampling technique will be employed to ensure adequate representation of SMEs operating in the manufacturing, trading, agricultural, hospitality, and service sectors. Primary data collected from respondents will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize demographic characteristics and respondents' perceptions. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) will be employed to examine the direct, mediating, and moderating relationships among the study variables. The measurement model will be evaluated using Cronbach's Alpha, Composite Reliability (CR), Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the reliability and validity of the research instrument. Additional diagnostic tests will be conducted to ensure the robustness and adequacy of the structural model. The study anticipates that digital payment adoption will have a significant positive impact on the financial reporting efficiency of SMEs by facilitating real-time transaction recording, reducing manual bookkeeping errors, improving transaction traceability, enhancing financial record accuracy, and accelerating the preparation of financial statements. The availability of electronic transaction records is expected to improve the completeness, timeliness, and reliability of financial information while reducing administrative costs associated with traditional cash-based accounting systems. Furthermore, accounting software utilization is expected to mediate the relationship between digital payment adoption and financial reporting efficiency. SMEs that integrate digital payment platforms with modern accounting software are expected to benefit from automated transaction processing, real-time financial reporting, improved reconciliation processes, efficient inventory management, and enhanced compliance with accounting standards and tax regulations. Consequently, accounting software utilization is anticipated to serve as the operational mechanism through which digital payment adoption translates into improved financial reporting efficiency.Furthermore, financial literacy is expected to moderate the relationship between digital payment adoption and financial reporting efficiency. SME owners and financial managers possessing higher levels of financial knowledge, accounting competence, and digital financial skills are expected to utilize digital payment systems and accounting software more effectively, thereby achieving greater improvements in financial reporting quality and operational efficiency. High levels of financial literacy are anticipated to facilitate informed decision-making, better cash flow management, effective budgeting, timely financial analysis, and compliance with regulatory reporting requirements. Conversely, SMEs with low levels of financial literacy may fail to maximize the benefits of digital payment technologies due to inadequate understanding of financial management principles, poor system utilization, and weak accounting practices. Therefore, financial literacy is expected to strengthen the positive relationship between digital payment adoption and financial reporting efficiency. This study is expected to make significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on accounting information systems, financial technology, SME management, and digital finance by integrating accounting software utilization as a mediating variable and financial literacy as a moderating variable into the relationship between digital payment adoption and financial reporting efficiency. Unlike previous studies that primarily examined the direct effects of digital payment systems on business performance or financial inclusion, this research provides a more comprehensive framework by explaining the mechanisms through which digital payment technologies improve financial reporting and identifying the organizational conditions that enhance these outcomes. The findings will provide valuable insights for SME owners, accountants, software developers, financial institutions, policymakers, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), accounting professional bodies, and financial technology providers regarding the importance of integrating digital payment systems with accounting software and promoting financial literacy among SME operators. The study will also offer evidence-based recommendations for strengthening digital financial infrastructure, improving accounting technology adoption, enhancing financial reporting efficiency, and supporting the sustainable growth and competitiveness of SMEs in Nigeria.
