Abstract

The study examines the analysis of policy duration and insurance claim experience, focusing on how the length of time an insurance policy remains active may influence the frequency, severity, and overall pattern of claims. Policy duration is an important consideration in insurance risk assessment because different periods of coverage may be associated with variations in exposure to insured risks and claims occurrence. Understanding these patterns is therefore relevant to insurers when evaluating portfolio performance and making informed actuarial decisions. The study will investigate the relationship between policy duration and insurance claim experience by examining how claims patterns vary across different periods of policy coverage. It will consider the extent to which shorter and longer policy durations are associated with differences in claim frequency, claim severity, claim amounts, and overall claims experience. The study will also assess the usefulness of policy duration information in analysing historical insurance losses. The analysis will focus on factors such as policy tenure, exposure period, number of claims, claim amounts, claim frequency, claim severity, and claims development patterns. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to identify variations in claim experience across different policy-duration categories. This will provide a clearer understanding of how the duration of insurance coverage relates to the experience of claims within an insurance portfolio. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance data containing information on policy duration, exposure periods, claims frequency, claims severity, and claim amounts will be obtained from appropriate secondary sources. Descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, measures of claim severity, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and other appropriate actuarial techniques will be used to analyse the data. The study is expected to reveal variations in claim experience across different policy-duration periods. It may show that changes in the length of policy coverage are associated with differences in claim frequency and severity due to variations in risk exposure over time. The findings may also indicate that longer or shorter policy durations can produce distinct claims patterns that should be considered when evaluating insurance portfolio experience. The findings are expected to provide useful information for insurance companies, actuaries, underwriters, and insurance analysts in assessing historical claims experience. A better understanding of policy-duration patterns may support improved claims forecasting, portfolio analysis, exposure measurement, and actuarial evaluation of insurance risks. The study may also assist insurers in reviewing their policy structures and strengthening the analysis of claims experience. The study concludes that policy duration provides useful information for understanding variations in insurance claim experience and assessing the development of insured losses over time. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies maintain reliable records of policy duration and claims experience and incorporate duration-based analysis into actuarial risk assessment and insurance portfolio management.
