Analysis of Premium Rating Factors in Motor Insurance
Abstract
The study examines the analysis of premium rating factors in motor insurance, with emphasis on the factors used by insurance companies to determine appropriate premium rates for motor insurance policies. Premium rating is an important actuarial activity because the premium charged should adequately reflect the level of risk associated with an insured vehicle and policyholder. Accurate assessment of rating factors can support appropriate pricing, reduce underwriting losses, and improve the financial stability of motor insurance operations. The study will investigate the major factors used in determining motor insurance premiums and examine their relationship with the level of premium charged. Specific attention will be given to factors such as vehicle type, vehicle age, vehicle value, driver age, driving experience, vehicle usage, geographical location, claims history, and coverage level. The study will assess how differences in these characteristics may influence the risk profile of motor insurance policies and consequently affect premium determination. The study will further analyse the relative importance of selected rating factors in motor insurance pricing. It will examine how variations in claims frequency and claims severity across different risk categories may influence the calculation of appropriate premiums. The study will also consider the role of actuarial risk classification in distinguishing between different levels of motor insurance risk and promoting more accurate premium assessment. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant motor insurance policy, claims, and exposure data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, actuarial techniques, and appropriate statistical methods. Claims frequency, claims severity, loss ratios, and premium levels will be examined across different rating categories. Regression analysis or other suitable actuarial models may also be applied to determine the extent to which selected rating factors are associated with motor insurance claims experience and premium levels. The study is expected to reveal that the selected premium rating factors have varying degrees of influence on motor insurance pricing. Factors such as claims history, vehicle characteristics, driver experience, vehicle usage, and geographical exposure are expected to demonstrate differences in claims experience and associated premium levels. The findings may indicate that appropriate consideration of these factors can improve the relationship between premiums charged and the underlying risk exposure. The study is further expected to establish that effective premium rating depends on the availability of reliable policy and claims data and the appropriate classification of motor insurance risks. Accurate assessment of rating factors may help insurers reduce underpricing and overpricing, improve premium adequacy, and strengthen underwriting decisions. The findings may also demonstrate the need for insurers to periodically review rating factors in response to changes in claims patterns, vehicle technology, driving behaviour, and other relevant risk conditions. The study concludes that the analysis of premium rating factors is essential for developing accurate and sustainable motor insurance pricing practices. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies strengthen their collection and analysis of motor insurance data, regularly evaluate the relevance of existing rating factors, apply appropriate actuarial techniques in premium determination, and ensure that premium rates adequately reflect the characteristics and risk levels of insured vehicles and policyholders.
