Analysis of Reinsurance Recoveries Under Different Retention Levels
Abstract
The study analyses reinsurance recoveries under different retention levels, focusing on how the proportion of insurance risk retained by an insurer influences the amount recoverable from a reinsurer. Retention level represents the portion of an insured loss that an insurer agrees to bear before reinsurance protection applies. It is an important consideration in reinsurance planning because changes in retention can affect the insurer's retained losses, reinsurance recoveries, claims exposure, and overall financial position. The study will investigate the relationship between retention levels and reinsurance recoveries under selected reinsurance arrangements. It will examine how different retention levels influence the amount of claims transferred to reinsurers and the portion of losses ultimately borne by the insurer. The study will also assess variations in expected recoveries under different claims experience and loss conditions. The study will focus on actuarial techniques for analysing reinsurance recoveries at alternative retention levels. Factors such as claim frequency, claim severity, retention amount, attachment point, reinsurance limit, gross claims, retained losses, and recoverable claims will be considered. Probability distributions and actuarial loss models may be applied to estimate expected recoveries and retained losses under different retention scenarios. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical insurance claims data will be analysed together with relevant reinsurance contract information. Descriptive statistics, probability distribution analysis, actuarial loss modelling, and scenario analysis will be employed to estimate reinsurance recoveries under different retention levels. The resulting recovery estimates will be compared to determine how changes in retention affect the financial distribution of insurance losses. The study is expected to reveal that changes in retention levels have a significant effect on reinsurance recoveries. Higher retention levels are expected to reduce the amount of losses recoverable from reinsurers while increasing the portion of claims retained by the insurer. Lower retention levels may result in greater reinsurance recoveries, particularly when claims exceed the applicable retention threshold. The findings may also indicate that the effect of retention levels becomes more significant for portfolios exposed to large or highly variable claims. The findings are expected to provide useful information for actuaries and insurance companies in evaluating appropriate retention levels and reinsurance structures. The study may assist insurers in assessing expected recoveries, measuring retained loss exposure, and improving reinsurance planning. It may also support more accurate actuarial projections of claims liabilities and help insurers understand the financial implications of alternative retention arrangements. The study concludes that retention levels are an important determinant of reinsurance recoveries and the distribution of insurance losses between insurers and reinsurers. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly evaluate their claims experience and use appropriate actuarial models when assessing alternative retention levels. Effective analysis of retention and recovery patterns may contribute to improved risk transfer, loss management, and financial planning.
