Application of Survival Analysis to Health Insurance Claims

Abstract

Health insurance claims involve patterns of occurrence and duration that are important for understanding the timing and development of insurance losses. The period between policy commencement, healthcare utilization, claim occurrence, and claim settlement can vary considerably among insured individuals. Understanding these time-related patterns is important for insurers seeking to improve claims management, estimate future claims experience, manage financial obligations, and strengthen actuarial decision-making. This study examines the application of survival analysis to health insurance claims. The study will investigate how survival analysis techniques can be used to examine the timing of healthcare claims and estimate the probability of remaining claim-free over specified periods. It will also consider how differences in policyholder characteristics and claims experience may influence the timing of claim occurrence. The study will consider survival analysis techniques such as Kaplan-Meier estimation, survival functions, hazard functions, and Cox proportional hazards modelling. These techniques will be applied to health insurance claims data to examine the duration until claim occurrence and identify patterns in claim timing. The study will also assess the usefulness of survival-based measures in predicting future claims experience and understanding variations in healthcare claim occurrence. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical health insurance claims and policy duration data will be collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate survival analysis techniques. Kaplan-Meier methods will be used to estimate survival probabilities, while hazard-based models may be applied to examine factors associated with the timing of claims. The results of the models will be evaluated to determine their usefulness for actuarial applications. The study is expected to reveal identifiable patterns in the timing of health insurance claims and demonstrate that survival analysis can provide useful information about the probability and timing of claim occurrence. It is anticipated that the likelihood of experiencing a claim may vary across different periods and policyholder groups. The findings may also show that survival and hazard models can provide useful estimates for understanding claim occurrence and future healthcare utilization. The expected findings will have important implications for health insurance companies, actuaries, and claims managers. The application of survival analysis may improve claims forecasting, risk classification, premium estimation, underwriting decisions, and claims management. It may also assist insurers in identifying periods of increased claim risk and developing more effective strategies for monitoring policyholder claims experience and managing future insurance liabilities. The study concludes that survival analysis provides a valuable statistical and actuarial approach for examining the timing of health insurance claims. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate appropriate survival analysis techniques into their actuarial and claims management processes where reliable time-to-event data are available. Regular analysis of claims timing and hazard patterns will contribute to improved risk assessment, forecasting, and financial planning within health insurance schemes.
