Abstract
Actuarial data segmentation refers to the process of dividing insurance data into distinct groups based on relevant characteristics for more detailed risk analysis and premium estimation. Segmentation allows insurers and actuaries to identify differences in claims experience, exposure characteristics, and loss patterns among groups of policyholders. The quality and structure of data segmentation may therefore influence the accuracy and consistency of insurance pricing estimates. This study will examine the effect of actuarial data segmentation on insurance pricing estimates. It will assess how different approaches to grouping insurance data influence estimated premium rates and expected losses. The study will also examine variations in pricing estimates across different data segments and determine how segmentation contributes to the identification and measurement of differences in insurance risk. The study will focus on actuarial data segmentation, insurance pricing estimates, risk classification, claims experience, exposure characteristics, premium rates, loss experience, claim frequency, claim severity, policyholder groups, and actuarial pricing models. Different segmentation approaches will be applied to insurance data to examine their effects on pricing outcomes. Statistical and actuarial techniques will be used to compare pricing estimates generated from segmented and less-segmented data structures. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. The magnitude of the effect may depend on the quality of available data, segment size, claims variability, exposure characteristics, and the relevance of the segmentation criteria. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, pricing analysts, underwriters, risk managers, regulators, and insurance researchers. It may provide useful information for improving risk classification, developing more consistent pricing estimates, analysing heterogeneous insurance portfolios, and strengthening actuarial decision-making. The findings may also assist insurers in determining appropriate ways of organising insurance data for pricing applications. The study concludes that actuarial data segmentation is an important consideration in insurance pricing because the organisation of historical insurance data can influence the estimation of risk and premium rates. It is therefore recommended that insurers use relevant segmentation criteria, maintain adequate data within each segment, regularly evaluate segment characteristics, and apply sensitivity analysis to assess the effect of alternative segmentation structures on pricing estimates.
