Effect of Actuarial Model Documentation on Model Validation Outcomes

Abstract

Actuarial models are widely used by insurance companies to support premium estimation, liability valuation, reserving, risk assessment, and financial decision-making. Proper documentation provides detailed information about the purpose, assumptions, data sources, methodologies, limitations, and applications of these models. The quality and completeness of model documentation may therefore influence the ability of actuaries and other reviewers to understand, assess, and validate actuarial models effectively. This study examines the effect of actuarial model documentation on model validation outcomes. The study will assess how the quality, completeness, clarity, and accessibility of model documentation influence the results obtained during the validation of actuarial models. It will focus on the relationship between documented model information and the effectiveness of validation procedures. The study will consider factors such as documentation completeness, clarity of actuarial assumptions, data source documentation, model methodology descriptions, parameter specifications, validation procedures, model limitations, and documentation accessibility. These factors will be examined to determine how differences in documentation quality affect the identification of model errors, inconsistencies, weaknesses, and areas requiring improvement during validation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be obtained through structured questionnaires and assessment of selected actuarial model documentation and validation records where available. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between documentation quality and model validation outcomes. Documentation quality indicators and validation results will be compared to assess their association. The study is expected to reveal that comprehensive and clearly structured actuarial model documentation may improve model validation outcomes. Well-documented models are expected to make it easier for validators to understand model structures, assess assumptions, trace data inputs, reproduce calculations, and identify potential weaknesses. The findings may also indicate that incomplete or unclear documentation can make validation more difficult and increase the possibility of unidentified model limitations. The study will be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, model validation teams, risk managers, regulators, and other professionals involved in actuarial modelling and model governance. It may provide useful information for strengthening documentation standards, improving model review processes, supporting transparency, and enhancing the reliability of actuarial models used for insurance decision-making and financial reporting. The study concludes that actuarial model documentation is an important component of effective model validation because adequate documentation supports understanding, review, testing, and assessment of model performance. It is therefore recommended that insurers establish clear documentation standards, regularly update model documentation, clearly record assumptions and methodologies, and ensure that relevant documentation is readily available throughout the model validation process.
