Effect of Aggregate Claim Distributions on Insurer Loss Projections
Abstract
Aggregate claim distributions represent the statistical distribution of the total claims incurred by an insurer over a specified period. They provide an important basis for understanding the combined effect of claim frequency and claim severity on an insurer’s overall loss experience. Accurate modelling of aggregate claims is therefore relevant to loss projection, premium estimation, reserve assessment, and insurance risk management. The study examines the effect of aggregate claim distributions on insurer loss projections. It will assess how different aggregate claim distributions influence the estimation of future insurer losses. The study will also examine the relationship between claim frequency, claim severity, aggregate claims, expected losses, and projected insurer loss levels. The study will focus on aggregate claim distributions, claim frequency, claim severity, expected aggregate losses, loss projections, claims volatility, and insurer risk exposure. Probability distributions and compound actuarial models will be applied to combine claim frequency and severity information and estimate aggregate losses under different assumptions. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will also be used to examine variations in projected losses across alternative distributional assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance claims data, including individual claim amounts, number of claims, claim frequency, claim severity, exposure levels, and historical aggregate losses, will be considered. Descriptive statistics, probability distribution fitting, compound distribution modelling, actuarial techniques, comparative analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be used to examine the effect of aggregate claim distributions on insurer loss projections. The study is expected to show that the choice and characteristics of aggregate claim distributions can influence projected insurer losses. Distributions with different assumptions about claim frequency, severity, variability, and extreme losses may produce different estimates of expected aggregate losses. The magnitude of these differences may depend on the quality of historical claims data, portfolio characteristics, selected probability distributions, and modelling assumptions. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, pricing analysts, and risk managers. The findings may support improved loss forecasting, premium determination, claims reserving, capital planning, risk assessment, and evaluation of potential future insurance losses. The study may also assist insurers in selecting appropriate aggregate claim models for projecting losses under varying claims conditions. The study concludes that aggregate claim distributions are an important component of insurer loss projections. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies apply appropriate probability and compound distribution models, regularly validate aggregate claims assumptions, and conduct sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effect of alternative distributional assumptions on projected losses.
