Effect of Catastrophe Capital Requirements on Insurance Solvency
Abstract
The study examines the effect of catastrophe capital requirements on insurance solvency, focusing on how the level of capital required to withstand losses arising from severe and low-frequency catastrophic events influences the financial strength of insurance companies. Catastrophic events can generate exceptionally large claims within short periods and may place substantial pressure on insurers’ financial resources. Adequate catastrophe capital requirements are therefore important for enabling insurers to absorb extreme losses and maintain their ability to meet policyholder obligations. The study will investigate the effect of catastrophe capital requirements on the solvency of insurance companies. It will examine catastrophe risk exposure, required capital, available capital, insurance liabilities, technical provisions, claims obligations, and solvency ratios. The study will assess whether changes in catastrophe-related capital requirements are associated with variations in insurers’ solvency positions and financial resilience. Specific attention will be given to catastrophic claims, aggregate loss exposure, underwriting risk, reinsurance arrangements, technical provisions, and capital adequacy. Actuarial risk models and stress-testing techniques will be applied to estimate potential catastrophe losses and evaluate the level of capital required to withstand adverse events. The study will also examine how different catastrophe scenarios may influence insurers’ capital positions and solvency margins. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Secondary data will be obtained from insurance companies, annual financial statements, regulatory publications, and relevant industry reports. Descriptive statistics, trend analysis, claims analysis, scenario analysis, solvency ratio analysis, and appropriate actuarial risk modelling techniques will be employed to assess catastrophe capital requirements and their effect on insurance solvency. The study is expected to reveal that higher catastrophe capital requirements may place additional demands on insurers’ available financial resources but can also strengthen their ability to withstand extreme losses. Insurers with adequate catastrophe capital are expected to maintain stronger solvency positions following severe claims events, while insufficient capital may increase financial vulnerability and threaten their ability to meet obligations. The findings are expected to provide useful information to insurance companies, actuaries, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders. The study may assist insurers in improving catastrophe risk assessment, capital planning, reinsurance decisions, and solvency management. Regulators may also benefit from the findings when evaluating insurers’ preparedness for extreme loss events and assessing the adequacy of catastrophe-related capital resources. The study concludes that appropriate catastrophe capital requirements are essential for strengthening insurance solvency and protecting insurers against the financial consequences of extreme events. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies regularly conduct catastrophe risk assessments and maintain adequate capital in relation to their exposure to severe losses. Actuarial stress testing, effective reinsurance planning, and continuous monitoring of catastrophe risk should also be encouraged to enhance solvency and long-term financial resilience.
