Effect of Construction Risk Categories on Contractors’ All-Risk Claim Frequency

Abstract

Contractors’ all-risk insurance provides comprehensive protection against various risks that may arise during construction projects, including accidental damage, material losses, equipment damage, and third-party exposures. Construction projects differ in their risk characteristics depending on factors such as project type, construction activities, site conditions, and equipment usage. The classification of these risks into different categories can therefore influence the frequency of claims recorded under contractors’ all-risk insurance policies. This study examines the effect of construction risk categories on contractors’ all-risk claim frequency. It will investigate how differences in the classification and characteristics of construction risks influence the occurrence of insured claims. The study will assess various construction risk categories and determine their relationship with the frequency of claims arising from contractors’ all-risk policies. The study will focus on factors such as construction project type, site hazards, equipment risks, material risks, structural risks, fire risks, weather exposure, third-party risks, project duration, and claim frequency. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be used to analyse differences in claim occurrence across the identified risk categories. Particular attention will be given to how the nature and level of construction exposure affect the expected number of insurance claims. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical contractors’ all-risk claims data and relevant construction risk information will be analysed using appropriate actuarial and statistical methods. Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, Poisson or negative binomial models, and comparative analysis will be employed to evaluate variations in claim frequency across different construction risk categories. The study is expected to show that construction risk categories with greater exposure to operational hazards, equipment damage, site accidents, or adverse environmental conditions may experience higher claim frequencies. Categories involving comparatively lower exposure may record fewer claims. The findings may also indicate that project type, construction duration, site conditions, and the nature of construction activities contribute to differences in contractors’ all-risk claim frequency. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, construction firms, contractors, brokers, and risk managers. Understanding the relationship between construction risk categories and claim frequency can support improved risk classification, premium determination, underwriting assessment, claims forecasting, and portfolio management. It may also assist insurers in developing more appropriate assumptions for evaluating construction-related insurance exposures. The study concludes that construction risk categories are important considerations in determining contractors’ all-risk claim frequency because different categories expose insured projects to varying levels and types of risk. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate relevant construction risk characteristics, historical claims experience, project information, and exposure measures into actuarial and underwriting models. Appropriate statistical and actuarial techniques should be applied to improve claim frequency estimation and support effective management of contractors’ all-risk insurance portfolios.
