Effect of Crop Yield Distributions on Agricultural Insurance Pricing

Abstract

Agricultural insurance provides financial protection against crop production losses arising from weather conditions, biological factors, and other agricultural risks. Crop yield is a major component of agricultural insurance because variations in yield directly influence the occurrence and magnitude of insured losses. The distribution of crop yields provides information about the frequency, variability, and probability of different production outcomes. Understanding crop yield distributions is therefore important for accurately estimating agricultural insurance risks and determining appropriate premium rates. This study examines the effect of crop yield distributions on agricultural insurance pricing. The study will assess how different patterns of crop yield outcomes influence expected insurance losses and premium estimates. It will examine the distribution of crop yields across different production periods and determine how variations in yield probabilities affect the actuarial assessment of agricultural insurance risks. The study will focus on crop yield characteristics such as mean yield, yield variability, skewness, dispersion, and the probability of low-yield outcomes. Probability distributions including normal, lognormal, gamma, and other suitable distributions may be considered in modelling crop yield outcomes. Actuarial pricing techniques will then be applied to estimate expected losses, risk premiums, and total insurance premiums under alternative crop yield distribution assumptions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted using historical crop yield data and relevant agricultural insurance information. Descriptive statistics will be used to examine crop yield patterns, while statistical distribution fitting techniques will be employed to identify suitable probability models for the observed yield data. Actuarial pricing models, expected loss estimation, and comparative analysis will subsequently be applied to determine how different yield distributions influence agricultural insurance premium estimates. The study is expected to reveal that crop yield distributions have a measurable effect on agricultural insurance pricing. Yield distributions characterized by greater variability or a higher probability of low-yield outcomes may produce higher expected losses and consequently higher risk-adjusted premiums. The findings may also show that the choice of an inappropriate probability distribution can result in inaccurate estimates of agricultural insurance risk and premium levels. The study will provide useful information for actuaries, agricultural insurers, farmers, agricultural institutions, and policymakers involved in agricultural risk management. A better understanding of crop yield distributions may improve the estimation of expected losses, premium adequacy, reserve requirements, and overall insurance risk exposure. The findings may also support the development of agricultural insurance products that more accurately reflect the underlying variability of crop production. The study concludes that crop yield distributions are an important consideration in the actuarial pricing of agricultural insurance. It is therefore recommended that insurers use appropriate statistical and actuarial methods to identify suitable yield distributions before determining premium rates. Accurate modelling of crop yield variability may enhance pricing reliability, improve risk assessment, and contribute to the financial sustainability of agricultural insurance schemes.
