Effect of Cyber Incident Duration on Cyber Insurance Claim Severity
Abstract
Cyber insurance provides financial protection against losses arising from cyber incidents such as data breaches, ransomware attacks, system disruptions, and unauthorized access to information systems. The duration of a cyber incident can influence the extent of operational disruption, recovery requirements, data exposure, and financial losses experienced by an insured organization. Understanding the relationship between incident duration and claim severity is therefore important for accurate cyber insurance risk assessment and actuarial valuation. This study will examine the effect of cyber incident duration on cyber insurance claim severity. It will assess how variations in the length of time required to detect, contain, and resolve cyber incidents influence the financial severity of insurance claims. The study will also examine differences in claim amounts associated with incidents of varying durations. The study will focus on cyber incident duration, cyber insurance claim severity, claim amounts, business interruption losses, recovery costs, data restoration expenses, legal costs, and incident-related financial losses. Actuarial and statistical techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between incident duration and claim severity. Loss distribution methods will also be used to estimate the financial implications of different incident-duration levels. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant cyber insurance claims data, incident durations, claim amounts, business interruption costs, recovery expenses, legal costs, and policy exposure information will be analysed using descriptive statistics, severity analysis, correlation and regression techniques, probability distributions, and actuarial loss modelling methods. Different cyber incident-duration categories will be compared to determine their effects on claim severity. The study is expected to reveal that longer cyber incident durations may be associated with higher claim severity. Extended incidents may result in prolonged business interruption, increased recovery expenses, greater data restoration costs, and additional legal or notification expenses, thereby increasing the total value of insurance claims. However, the magnitude of the relationship may vary according to the type of cyber incident, affected systems, level of data exposure, and characteristics of the insured organization. The study will be useful to actuaries, cyber insurers, underwriters, risk managers, cybersecurity professionals, regulators, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving cyber insurance claim severity estimation and strengthening risk assessment practices. The findings may also support more accurate premium determination, claims forecasting, reserve estimation, and management of cyber insurance portfolios. The study concludes that cyber incident duration is an important factor in assessing the severity of cyber insurance claims. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate incident-duration data alongside historical claims experience, business interruption costs, recovery expenses, and appropriate actuarial loss models when estimating cyber insurance claim severity.
