Effect of Driver Age on Motor Insurance Claim Frequency
Abstract
The study examines the effect of driver age on motor insurance claim frequency, focusing on the importance of age-related differences in assessing motor insurance risks. Driver characteristics can influence the likelihood of road accidents and subsequent insurance claims, making demographic factors relevant to actuarial risk classification and motor insurance pricing. Understanding the relationship between driver age and claim frequency can therefore assist insurers in developing more appropriate risk assessment and premium rating practices. The study will investigate the effect of driver age on the frequency of motor insurance claims. It will examine differences in claim occurrence among drivers within different age groups and determine whether certain age categories experience relatively higher or lower claim frequencies. The study will also consider the extent to which age-related variations in driving experience, behaviour, and exposure to road risks may be reflected in motor insurance claim experience. The study will further analyse motor insurance claims according to relevant driver age categories and assess the frequency of claims recorded within each group. Statistical analysis will be used to determine whether observed differences in claim frequency across age groups are significant. Attention will also be given to the implications of age-based claim patterns for risk classification, premium determination, underwriting, and motor insurance portfolio management. A quantitative research approach will be adopted using relevant historical motor insurance policy and claims data containing information on driver age and claim occurrence. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize claim frequencies across the selected age groups, while appropriate statistical techniques such as frequency analysis, chi-square tests, Poisson regression, or other suitable methods will be applied to examine the relationship between driver age and claim frequency. The results will be evaluated using appropriate statistical significance measures. The study is expected to reveal variations in motor insurance claim frequency across different driver age groups. Younger and less experienced drivers may exhibit higher claim frequencies, while more experienced age groups may demonstrate different patterns of claim occurrence. However, the findings are expected to depend on the characteristics of the available data and the exposure of drivers within each age category. The study is further expected to establish that driver age can provide useful information for motor insurance risk classification and pricing. A clearer understanding of age-related claim patterns may assist insurers in improving premium rating, underwriting decisions, claims management, and portfolio risk assessment. The findings may also provide actuarial practitioners with empirical information for developing more accurate models of motor insurance claim frequency. The study concludes that analysing the effect of driver age on motor insurance claim frequency is important for improving risk assessment and actuarial decision-making. It is therefore recommended that insurance companies should consider reliable age-related claims experience when developing motor insurance pricing and underwriting models, while ensuring that age-based assessments are supported by relevant statistical evidence and regularly reviewed using updated claims data.
