Effect of Employee Wage Levels on Workers’ Compensation Insurance Liabilities
Abstract
Workers’ compensation insurance provides financial protection against liabilities arising from work-related injuries, disabilities, and other occupational incidents covered under an insurance policy. Employee wage levels are an important consideration in determining compensation because benefits may be calculated partly from the earnings of affected employees. Changes in wage levels can therefore influence the amount of compensation payable and the overall liabilities assumed by insurers. This study examines the effect of employee wage levels on workers’ compensation insurance liabilities. It will investigate how variations in employee earnings influence the expected value of compensation payments and the liabilities that insurers may incur. The study will consider different wage levels and assess their implications for the financial obligations associated with workers’ compensation insurance. The study will focus on factors such as employee wage levels, compensation benefits, injury frequency, disability duration, claim severity, employee exposure, benefit limits, claim duration, and policy coverage conditions. Actuarial techniques will be applied to estimate expected compensation liabilities under different wage assumptions. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between employee earnings and the potential size of compensation payments arising from insured workplace injuries. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Historical workers’ compensation claims and employee wage information will be analysed using appropriate actuarial and statistical methods. Descriptive statistics, probability models, actuarial present value calculations, regression analysis, and comparative techniques will be employed to assess variations in insurance liabilities across different wage levels. The study is expected to show that higher employee wage levels may result in higher workers’ compensation insurance liabilities where compensation benefits are linked to earnings. Lower wage levels may correspond with lower expected benefit payments and consequently lower insurer liabilities. The findings may also indicate that injury frequency, disability duration, claim severity, and applicable benefit limits influence the extent to which wage levels affect total compensation liabilities. The study is expected to provide useful information for actuaries, insurance companies, employers, workers’ compensation administrators, and risk managers. Understanding the relationship between employee wages and compensation liabilities can support more accurate reserve estimation, premium determination, liability forecasting, and financial planning. It may also assist insurers in developing appropriate actuarial assumptions for evaluating workers’ compensation risks across different employee wage structures. The study concludes that employee wage levels are an important factor in estimating workers’ compensation insurance liabilities because they can influence the amount of compensation payable for covered occupational injuries and disabilities. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate reliable wage information, claims experience, disability duration, benefit structures, and relevant actuarial assumptions into liability valuation models. Appropriate actuarial techniques should be applied to ensure that workers’ compensation reserves adequately reflect expected future benefit obligations.
