Effect of Insurance Coverage Extensions on Expected Claim Costs

Abstract

Insurance coverage extensions are additional provisions that expand the scope of protection provided under an insurance policy beyond its basic coverage. These extensions may introduce additional insured risks, events, benefits, or circumstances that can generate claims and associated financial obligations for insurers. As a result, the inclusion and structure of coverage extensions may influence the expected frequency and severity of claims and consequently affect expected claim costs. This study examines the effect of insurance coverage extensions on expected claim costs. It will assess how variations in the scope and availability of coverage extensions influence the expected cost of claims arising from insured risks. The study will also examine the relationship between coverage extensions, claim frequency, claim severity, policy exposure, and aggregate claim costs. The study will focus on actuarial factors including the type and extent of coverage extensions, additional exposure periods, claim frequency, claim severity, benefit limits, deductibles, policy duration, and historical claims experience. Actuarial loss models and probability distributions will be applied to estimate expected claim costs under different coverage extension structures and to determine their financial implications for insurance portfolios. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant insurance policy and claims data, including coverage extensions, policy exposure, claim frequencies, claim amounts, benefit limits, deductibles, and historical claims experience, will be obtained from appropriate insurance sources. Descriptive statistics, frequency and severity analysis, correlation analysis, regression techniques, comparative analysis, and aggregate loss estimation will be employed to evaluate the effect of insurance coverage extensions on expected claim costs. The study is expected to find that variations in insurance coverage extensions may have measurable effects on expected claim costs. Additional coverage may increase the range of insured risks and consequently increase the potential number or value of claims payable by insurers. However, the magnitude of the effect may depend on the frequency and severity of the additional risks, coverage limits, deductibles, policy duration, and characteristics of the insured portfolio. The findings may be useful to actuaries, insurance companies, underwriters, product developers, claims managers, and risk analysts. Understanding the effect of coverage extensions can support more accurate claim cost estimation, premium determination, product pricing, policy design, reserve assessment, and portfolio risk management. It may also assist insurers in evaluating the financial implications of adding or modifying coverage provisions. The study concludes that insurance coverage extensions are important considerations in estimating expected claim costs because they can change the scope of risks for which insurers assume financial responsibility. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate the expected claims arising from coverage extensions into actuarial pricing and loss estimation models. Regular analysis of claims experience associated with extended coverage may improve claim cost projections and support effective insurance risk management.
