Abstract
Interest rate curves are important in life insurance liability valuation because they provide the basis for discounting future contractual cash flows to their present values. The shape of an interest rate curve may vary between upward-sloping, downward-sloping, and relatively flat structures, reflecting differences in interest rates across maturities. Changes in the curve shape can therefore influence the present value of future insurance benefits, claims, expenses, and other contractual obligations. This study examines the effect of interest rate curve shape on life insurance liability valuation. The study will investigate how alternative interest rate curve structures influence the measurement of life insurance liabilities over different policy durations. Particular attention will be given to the effects of upward-sloping, downward-sloping, and flat yield curves on the discounted value of future insurance cash flows. The study will consider factors such as interest rate levels, curve slope, policy duration, maturity of insurance obligations, expected benefit payments, mortality assumptions, expense cash flows, and discount rates. Actuarial valuation techniques will be used to estimate life insurance liabilities under different interest rate curve structures. Comparative and sensitivity analyses will also be conducted to determine the extent to which changes in the shape of the curve affect liability values. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. The findings of the study may provide useful information to actuaries, life insurance companies, investment managers, financial analysts, and insurance regulators. Understanding the effect of interest rate curve shape can support more accurate liability valuation, improved interest rate risk management, appropriate financial planning, and better asset-liability management. The study may also assist insurers in evaluating the sensitivity of long-term insurance obligations to changes in market yield structures. The study concludes that interest rate curve shape is an important consideration in life insurance liability valuation because differences in rates across maturities can significantly influence the present value of future insurance obligations. It is therefore recommended that insurers incorporate appropriate yield curve structures into actuarial valuation models, regularly assess curve movements, conduct sensitivity and scenario analysis, and align liability valuation practices with prevailing interest rate conditions.
