Effect of Mortality Graduation Methods on Life Table Accuracy

Abstract

The study examines the effect of mortality graduation methods on life table accuracy, focusing on how the smoothing and adjustment of observed mortality rates influence the reliability of mortality estimates presented in life tables. Mortality data may contain random fluctuations, irregular patterns, or inconsistencies across different ages, which can affect the smoothness and usefulness of crude mortality rates. Mortality graduation provides actuarial techniques for producing smoother and more consistent mortality rates for demographic and insurance applications. The study will investigate how different mortality graduation methods affect the accuracy of life table estimates. It will assess the extent to which graduated mortality rates provide a more consistent representation of underlying mortality experience compared with crude mortality rates. The study will also examine how the choice of graduation method influences important life table functions such as probabilities of death, survival probabilities, life expectancy, and expected future lifetime. The analysis will focus on mortality graduation methods, crude mortality rates, graduated mortality rates, life table accuracy, survival probabilities, mortality probabilities, and life expectancy. Selected graduation techniques will be applied to mortality data and their resulting life table functions will be compared. Statistical measures will be used to assess differences between observed mortality experience and mortality rates generated through the selected graduation approaches. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Appropriate graduation techniques may reduce random fluctuations and produce smoother mortality patterns that provide more consistent estimates of survival and mortality probabilities. However, differences among graduation methods may result in variations in life table functions, particularly where the underlying mortality data contain substantial irregularities or limited observations. The findings are expected to provide useful information for actuaries, demographers, and insurance practitioners in selecting suitable mortality graduation methods for life table construction. The study may support more reliable mortality assumptions for life insurance valuation, pension calculations, annuity pricing, and other actuarial applications. It may also contribute to improved interpretation of mortality experience by demonstrating the importance of selecting appropriate graduation techniques. The study concludes that the choice of mortality graduation method is an important consideration in the construction and accuracy of life tables. It is therefore recommended that actuaries evaluate alternative graduation methods using appropriate statistical and actuarial criteria before selecting a method for mortality estimation and life table development.
