Effect of Mortality Graduation on Life Insurance Valuation Accuracy
Abstract
The study examines the effect of mortality graduation on life insurance valuation accuracy. Mortality data obtained from observed populations often contain random fluctuations, irregular patterns, or inconsistencies that may affect actuarial calculations. Mortality graduation provides statistical and actuarial techniques for smoothing observed mortality rates and producing more consistent estimates for different ages. Accurate graduated mortality rates are therefore important for reliable life insurance valuation, premium determination, and reserve estimation. The study will investigate how mortality graduation affects the accuracy of life insurance valuation. It will compare insurance valuation results obtained using raw mortality data with those obtained from graduated mortality rates. The study will assess differences in actuarial present values, premium estimates, and reserve values resulting from the use of alternative mortality data treatments. The analysis will focus on observed mortality rates, graduated mortality rates, mortality probabilities, survival probabilities, life table functions, interest rate assumptions, policy duration, and benefit amounts. Selected mortality graduation techniques will be applied to observed mortality data to produce smoothed mortality estimates. The resulting mortality rates will then be incorporated into life insurance valuation models to determine their effect on calculated policy values and liabilities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Relevant mortality data and actuarial life tables will be used to construct representative life insurance valuation scenarios. Statistical graduation techniques, life table methods, actuarial present value calculations, mortality and survival probabilities, and comparative analysis will be employed. The valuation results derived from raw and graduated mortality rates will be compared using appropriate measures of variation and valuation accuracy. The study is expected to reveal that mortality graduation can produce noticeable differences in life insurance valuation results. Graduated mortality rates are expected to provide smoother and more consistent age-specific mortality estimates, which may reduce the effects of random fluctuations in observed mortality data. Consequently, valuations based on graduated rates may show greater consistency in premium and reserve estimates, particularly where the underlying mortality data contain irregular age-to-age variations. The study will provide useful information for actuaries, life insurance companies, regulators, and researchers by demonstrating the importance of appropriate mortality data treatment in actuarial valuation. The findings may assist insurers in selecting suitable mortality graduation techniques, improving the reliability of life insurance premiums and reserves, and strengthening the quality of actuarial assumptions. The study may also contribute to the understanding and practical application of mortality graduation in life insurance valuation. The study concludes that mortality graduation is an important actuarial technique for improving the consistency of mortality estimates used in life insurance valuation. It is therefore recommended that insurers carefully evaluate the quality of observed mortality data and apply appropriate graduation techniques where necessary. Regular validation of graduated mortality rates should also be undertaken to support reliable premium calculations, reserve estimation, and accurate valuation of life insurance obligations.
